  1. Luke 19:28-40; 23:32-56 Class: Middlers Day:April 17th, 2011 Unit: The Book of Luke Title: Riding to Jerusalem Length of Lesson: One Hour • Materials: • Paper strips • Markers • Cutouts for the story • Green construction paper • Scissors • Pre cut crosses • yarn • Rice Krispies and water Scripture Summary: Jesus went into Jerusalem on a donkey while crowds cheered. Jesus was later crucified. Goal: To remind the children what Jesus did for us. Objective: Students will be able to understand why Jesus died and why that is so important.

  2. Anticipatory Set: Have the children write down on strips of paper places they have been or would like to go and staple them together to make a paper chain. • Procedure: • Read Luke 19:28-40; 23:32-56 using the cut-outs as a visual for the children (five minutes) • Discuss the story (ten minutes) • -Discuss what “Palm Sunday” is. • -Talk about how exciting it would to be part of that crowd • -What would it feel like to be Jesus then? • -Why did Jesus die? • -What does that mean to us? • -How would you feel if you saw Jesus treated so harshly? • Eat the snack of water and rice krispies (ten minutes) • Make the paper cross and thread the string in the correct pattern. Lead all the children through it together as a class. (twenty five minutes) • Make palm leafs to wave around the rest of the day, praising the Lord.( ten minutes) • -fold the green construction paper in half and then cut a half a heart with a stem. • -cut slits in it • -wave around

  3. Closure: Say a prayer thanking God for forgiving our sins and sending Jesus to die for us. Modifications: -children that finish the snack early may pick out cross colors awhile -kids that figure out cross pattern on own and finish early can start on getting their the palm leaf supplies -kids that finish the palm leaf early may wave it around and re-enact the bible story awhile they wait Evaluation: The children loved making the paper chain and tried to make it go across the whole room. They were quite sad when they ran out of paper. The story was good for the kids. But the cross craft may have been a little above some of the children’s capabilities and focus levels. There was not much room for creativity which was bad for some, but others liked. The class seemed more under control.
