  1. Fieldbus Gavin Holt 9/5/2014

  2. What is a Fieldbus • Communications network that links field devices, like controllers, transducers, actuators and sensors that is a digital, bi-directional, multidrop, serial-bus. • Bi-directional- the data can be transmitted in two directions at the same time • Multidrop-Single bus with multiple nodes connected • Serial-bus-data is transferred serially • Replaces the 4-20mA analogue signal

  3. When and What Used For? • To reduce installation cost – less wiring – less matanance • To improve reaction time. A Fieldbus is in real time.

  4. Who and Where are They Used? • Used in complex hierarchy automation systems, such as large manufacturing plants. • Where large amounts of devises are used.

  5. Disadvantages • Systems are complex, causing need for training. • The devices have to be standardized • Components are more expensive

  6. Supporting Tech. • Bus Terminal • EtherCAT  • Fieldbus Box   • Lightbus   • PC Fieldbus Cards • Switches

  7. Currently in Industry In a servey conducted by ARC in 2005 • 61% of respondents are planning to install In 2006 the largest Fondation Fieldbus was installed in china at NanHai with about 15,000 Field Devices

  8. Cost • Varies depending on complexity of network and on number of field devices attached.

  9. Redundant Fieldbus Interface

  10. Standards There are a wide variety of concurring fieldbus standards. Some of the most widely used ones include: • AS-Interface • CAN • Industrial Ethernet • Interbus • LonWorks • Modbus • PROFIBUS • SafetyBUS There are many others, categorized as: • Process automation protocols • Building automation protocols • Substation automation protocols • Automobile / Vehicle protocol buses

  11. Venders

  12. Technical Paper “The new, intelligent, digital control system enables plant personnel to create and maintain the ideal conditions for production of soda ash crystals.”

  13. Summary • Fieldbus Devices can lower wiring and maintenance costs • Fieldbus are becoming more widely used • Fieldbus have many standards allowing different manufactured parts to integrate together
