THE SQUASH FAMILY Kingdom: Plantae Division: Magnoliophyta Class: Magnoliopsida Order: Cucurbitales Family:Cucurbitaceae The fruit produced by this family is often an altered type of berry called a pepo. Scientific Name : Cucurbitaceae The family’s population is mostly distributed around the tropics. Along with most edible fruits, these were among some of the earliest cultivated plants in both the Old and New Worlds There are 960 species in the Squash Family! This family includes all fruits with a rind or rough skin. Fruits like : Squash, melons, cucumbers, pumpkins, gourds, cantaloupe etc! The flowers are unisexual. Male and female flowers are on different plants, or the same plant. Special purposes: Lagenariasiceraria: (bottle gourd) used as containers, floats, and hollow sounds for musical instruments.
