  3. HISTORY & GEOGRAPHY The Cheyenne Indians were victims of smallpox and other European diseases they have brought with them. The Cheyenne diseases killed 150 Cheyenne Indians. In the 1800’s the Cheyenne Indians split into two groups; North Cheyenne and South Cheyenne. In the Little Big Horn Fight the Cheyenne and Sioux fought as one and killed over 200 U.S. troops, the Europeans won eventually. Then the Europeans pushed the Cheyenne Indians off their land.   5. HOMES The Cheyenne lived in Montana, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Wyoming. Sometimes Cheyenne Indians had to move, so that is a reason they lived all over. Since, the Cheyenne were hunters they had tepees which where made of buffalo and wooden poles. The Cheyenne often painted their tepees with bright colors.   7. FOOD The Cheyenne Indians ate buffalo, antelope, wild sheep, deer, and elk. The next three listed things are food and medicine; berries, roots, and seeds. The females went and got those three things. The males were the farmers and hunters. They hunted all the animals I have listed, and squirrel and rabbit. The males grew, corn, beans, squash, and turnips.   8. CUSTOMS & RELIGION Some religions and customs of the Cheyenne are powwows, many, many gods and spirits. The Cheyennes have two main gods, Heammwihio, the wise one above, Ahktunowwihio, the wise on below. The Cheyenne are scared of underwater spirits and ghosts making noises around the camp. They also, have ceremonies for the good gods which the priests held. One of the gods are Thunderbird who brought summer rains. Sometimes all ten camps gather together for ceremonies. The Cheyenne had four sacred arrows and a sacred buffalo hat which had the skin and hair.   9. INTERESTING FACTS Did you that the Cheyenne were one of the first Indians to discover horses? Well, they were! The Spanish people brought the here. The Cheyenne military society includes, Bowstring, Dog, Elk, Fox, and Shield. The societies had four leaders. The Cheyenne actually had jobs! They were, firefighters, security guards, and at family casinos. For a male to marry a female he had to have a relative talk to the family of his love. The Cheyenne called themselves Tsisiststas means “The people” or “Beautiful”. The name Cheyenne is a mistake, really it is a Sioux word for Cree. http://www.yippy.com/ MAIN MENU
