  2. WHAT IS THE VESTA PROJECT ? VESTA is an EC funded project within the framework of the program "European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights“, Campaign 2 "Fostering a culture of Human Rights in Vietnam“.

  3. WHY USE “VESTA” AS THE NAME OF THE PROJECT ? VESTA is the Latin Goddess of hearth and home, meant to protect the basic means of human life. For this reason her name was chosen for the title of this project, which aims at promoting the respect for Human Rights, in particular the rights of the most vulnerable groups of people, namely women, children and victims of human trafficking.

  4. OVERALLOBJECTIVE To raise awareness on human rights issues, particularly women and children’s rights and the phenomenon of human trafficking in Vietnam and therefore support advocacy actions aimed at enhancing the capacity of civil society in promoting human rights

  5. IN PARTICULAR To empower the participants – Vietnamese representatives of NGOs and the academia - in effectively promoting the respect for the rights of children and women, and the protection of victims of trafficking.

  6. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES • Increasing the awareness of NGOs involved in the promotion of Human Rights and the fight against human trafficking, and in the long term the Vietnamese civil society as a whole; • Wide dissemination of information on basic Human Rights of children and women and on human trafficking, through the training seminar, the informative sessions, the distribution of leaflets and the website; • Prevention of potential victims from becoming real victims of human trafficking; • Raising awareness at all levels of the Vietnamese society, thereby laying the foundation for a better protection of basic Human Rights.

  7. TARGET GROUPS Representatives of local NGOs actively involved in the promotion of Human Rights and working with vulnerable persons. Educational sector, notably students and researchers, reached through the means of informative sessions, printed material and the website.

  8. FINAL BENEFICIARIES • The indirect beneficiaries will be the vulnerable groups addressed by the programme, notably women, children and victims of trafficking. • The final beneficiaries will consist of the Vietnamese society as a whole.

ACTIVITIES Kick-off Meeting Five-day intensive seminar and training course for local NGOs specializing in women’s and children’s rights, and the fight against human trafficking Publication of 5.000 informative leaflets and booklets One-day informative sessions in 50 schools and 20 universities in Hanoi Creation of a website on human trafficking, women’s and children’s rights in English and Vietnamese Final meeting

  12. WHAT HAS BEEN ACHIEVED? EVALUATION OF THE ACTIVITIES AND THEIR RESULTS

Activity 1 Kick-off Meeting DESCRIPTION Organized on15 February 2008 Dividedinto two sessions: Session 1: formal presentation of the project attended by the Greek Ambassador, the President of the EC Delegation in Vietnam and the press. Session 2: discussion on all aspects of VESTA among the related parties.

  14. Activity 1 Kick-off Meeting (cont.) RESULTS Project advertized and civil society informed. Action Plan, methodology, assignment of roles and determination of schedule ensuring the smooth implementation of the project discussed and agreed upon.

  15. Activity 2 Five-day intensive seminar and training course DESCRIPTION Lectures organized by the EPLC. Participants: 40 representatives of local NGOs from Hanoi and the neighbouring provinces, working in the field of human trafficking, children’s and women’s rights, lawyers, PhD candidates and the Chairman of the Hanoi Association of Lawyers. Focused on gender issues, the fight against human trafficking, administrative and managerial aspects, lobbying and advocacy topics.

RESULTS ACHIEVED Participants conferred a general overview on women and children’s rights, and the fight against human trafficking; Participants provided specialized capacity building training in order to strengthen the NGO management capacities and coordination skills; Participants provided with the necessary know-how and training instruments so as to become trainers in future projects and trainings; All the material produced during the seminar translated, distributed and uploaded on the VESTA project website; All material produced was used for the preparation of the following activity: publication of leaflets and booklets.

METHODOLOGY Train the trainers approach  ensure sustainability and duplication of the results, prepare the basis for future projects to be implemented. Evaluation through questionnaires: Questionnaires distributed to the participants prior and following the seminar in order to evaluate the acquired knowledge Questionnaires for the evaluation of the seminars collected at the end of the activity

Activity 3 Publication of informative leaflets and booklets SUBJECT MATTER AND DISTRIBUTION Information on human trafficking in Vietnam Copies were distributed to the participants during the informative sessions of Activity 4, as well as to Vietnamese NGOs and local authorities, including those located in remote areas. Copies were also sent to embassies and international NGOs and IGOs involved in these issues and present in Vietnam.

RESULTS ACHIEVED Basic information on human trafficking, women’s and children’s rights widely disseminated among the population. People from a wide range of social backgrounds and geographical locations, including remote areas, reached. Awareness on the risks of human trafficking raised. Leaflets and booklet uploaded in electronic form on the VESTA project website

CHARACTERISTICS The material consisted of short texts written in a clear and simple way, and accompanied by visual aids, so as for it to be accessible by the largest possible number of people, regardless of their cultural and social backgrounds. Published in Vietnamese and English, in order to additionally reach foreigners trafficked to Vietnam.

Activity 4 informative sessions in schools and universities DESCRIPTION The local NGO experts who participated in the seminar and training course, held one-day informative sessions on women’s and children’s rights and the fight against human trafficking addressed to the students of 50 schools and 20 universities in Hanoi.

RESULTS ACHIEVED Awareness raised among the academia on the rights of vulnerable groups, in particular children and women, and on the human trafficking phenomenon Knowledge of civil society and educational institutes on the local situation and on the international instruments in terms of human rights protection advanced

  27. Activity 4 informative sessions in schools and universities (cont.) METHODOLOGY According to the train the trainers approach, the experts diffused the scientific knowledge acquired during the seminars and the training course to the high school and university students.

CONTINUING CHALLENGES TO BE ADDRESSED Main routes: Cambodia, China, Thailand + internal trafficking from the rural areas to the main urban centers Main victims: underage girls and children from the North and South rural areas, especially from the border provinces Main Purposes: sexual exploitation, especially forced and fake marriages, labor exploitation Main causes: lack of information and education, poverty and lack of opportunities, gender inequality and social exclusion

  33. FURTHER ACTIONS NEEDED Prevention through educational and awareness-raising activities on the risks of human trafficking linked to international as well as internal migration Educational activities aiming at combating discrimination against and social exclusion of the returned victims of human trafficking, as well as promoting their reintegration Target groups: young people, especially girls, between the age of 12 and 18, and their families Target areas: the remote and rural areas in the North and South provinces, especially at the borders
