  1. An overviewof common esophageal disorders

  2. Introduction The esophagus is an 8-inch-long tube that connects the throat with the pharynx. It runs behind the windpipe and passes through the diaphragm to enter the stomach. Although the esophagus is an important organ that helps in swallowing, it cannot function properly if the entire swallowing apparatus comprising of the pharynx and the upper, as well as lower esophageal sphincters, do not work in sync. If any of these parts do not function well, the patient must immediately visit one of the best esophagus doctors in Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, or any other city where there are specialists in this domain.

  3. Common esophageal disorders Achalasia It is a neurogenic esophageal motility disorder that results in issues like dysphagia and regurgitation of undigested food.

  4. Eosinophilic esophagitis It is a chronic immune-mediated disease that usually results in eosinophil-predominant inflammation of the esophagus. If left untreated, this condition can lead to strictures or esophageal narrowing.

  5. Mallory-Weiss syndrome It is a non-penetrating mucosal laceration of the distal end of the esophagus as well as the proximal part of the stomach. It can often lead to an upper GI hemorrhage as well as pain in the lower chest.

  6. Gastro-esophageal reflux disease This condition is characterized by the reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus due to the malfunctioning of the lower esophageal sphincter.

  7. Barrett’s esophagus This condition is characterized by a change in the structure of the lower part of the esophagus due to regular stomach acid refluxes. It often leads to esophageal cancer and must be treated by the best esophagus doctors in Delhi, Gurugram, Chennai, or any other city that has multi-specialty hospitals with doctors specializing in these conditions.

  8. Esophageal cancer A debilitating condition, esophageal cancer can be of two types namely, squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. This is characterized by difficulty or pain in swallowing, weight loss, hoarseness, indigestion, and heartburn.

  9. Keeping the esophagus healthy Like every other organ of the human body, it is important to take steps to ensure the health of the esophagus too. Avoiding tobacco and alcohol, maintaining adequate body weight, and getting medical help at the very onset of any disorder can always help in maintaining a healthy esophagus and keeping debilitating conditions like cancer at bay.
