  2. Transition Planning Transition planning is an ongoing process that is reviewed annually at the IEP meeting. Specific transition activities begin as a student enters the 9th grade or turns 14.

  3. The Work Study Program The Work Study Program is available to both diploma and certificate bound students receiving Special Education services. Students must be at least 16 years old. Work Study is a supported program where students work in independent placements in the community with drop in support services from HCPSS staff. Students can work in both training and paid jobs.

  4. The level of independence necessary for Work Study requires students to work with minimal support… • Significant change from Work Enclave • .Work Study has periodic drop in service… • student must be able to listen to a variety of new adult supervisors • Manage time • Be able to handle emergency situations…fire drill, illness • Demonstrate flexibility…bus breaks down, tasks change at work, substitute in for regular supervisor • Work with peers without being distracted

  5. Transportation Students are provided bus transportation to most of Howard County. With family permission, they can also drive, ride the Howard Transit System, or walk to work. Students riding HCPSS buses are responsible for… • Independently boarding & riding the bus to the Hub location (Old Cedar Lane School) • Independently transferring to the bus that takes them to work • Independently coming out of work placement on time at the end of work to get the bus back to the Hub • Independently finding, boarding and riding their home school bus back

  6. Work Study Referral Process IEP Team Decision The following factors are considered during the decision making process… • Age 16+ • Evaluations from Work Enclave Program • Classroom teacher reports • Adaptive Behavior Checklists • classroom and vocational settings • Discipline issues (Behavior Intervention Plan, referrals) • Attendance History

  7. A Typical Work Study Day • 7:25-10:10 Classes in school • 10:45-11:15 Transportation (school bus or HTS if appropriate) • Board bus at school then switch to routed bus that drops you off at worksite • 11:15-1:25 Placements • Variety of placements—training or paid (paid may continue after school hours) • 1:30-2:05 Transportation to Hub and continue back to home school

  8. Typical Work Study Placement Progression for ALS students… • Begins with placement in a school setting • Supported, structured environment • Placement is can be for 2 to 4 days per week • Determined by level of student independence • Number of days increase with success • Often need multiple placements at this level • Examples: custodial, cafeteria, office support, classrooms (art, kindergarten, etc.)

  9. What are we looking for to move to community based placements? The ability to… • Work for the allotted time (90+ minutes) • Without breaks • Follow multi-step directions • Demonstrate initiative • Work with peers • Not distracted by behavior of others • Works, does not socialize on site • Manage time • On time for buses • Completes tasks in expected time frame • Follow a schedule • Ability to accept feedback • Responds to feedback both positive & negative • Asks questions for clarification • Accepts and respects feedback from all supervisors

  10. Next progression of placements… • Volunteer position in school system, not school based • Board of Education mailroom, custodial • Print shop • Office of Special Education, Assistive Technology • Volunteer Position in the community • Bagel Bin, River Hill Garden Center, Libraries • Howard County General Hospital, Weis Markets • Paid position with Work Study support
