  1. Sali Blum Unfortunately, there are groups like the Yachad and Jonestown still around today. The Heaven’s Gate suicide of 1997, the Hare Krishna, and the Church of Scientology are just a few examples of present cult-like groups. Not all groups are as extreme as others, but one thing they all have in common is the search for a truth, unity, and peace. Regrettably, the end goal is often masked by the desire for power and control which is inevitably a trait often found in the leader.

Meaning of Pesher • Pesher in Hebrew = Patar in Aramaic Used also to refer to dream interpretation As the Talmud says: “All dreams follow their interpretation.” אמר רבי ביזנא בר זבדא אמר רבי עקיבא אמר רבי פנדא אמר רב נחום אמר רבי בירים משום זקן אחד, ומנו - רבי בנאה: עשרים וארבעה פותרי חלומות היו בירושלים, ופעם אחת חלמתי חלום והלכתי אצל כולם, ומה שפתר לי זה לא פתר לי זה - וכולם נתקיימו בי, לקיים מה שנאמר: כל החלומות הולכים אחר הפה. אטו כל החלומות הולכים אחר הפה קרא הוא? - אין, וכדרבי אלעזר, דאמר רבי אלעזר: מנין שכל החלומות הולכין אחר הפה - שנאמר (בראשית מ"א) ויהי כאשר פתר לנו כן היה.

  4. Types • Continuous Pesharim – verse by verse interpretations. Only exists for Prophets and Psalms (ex. Pesher Hosea A and B) • Thematic Pesharim – pesher interpretations of various verses relating to a theme such as End of Days • Isolated Psharim – embedded within larger texts like the Zadokite Fragment

  5. Pesharim are Sectarian • They express the beliefs peculiar to the sect • Share terminology with other sectarian writings • Uses peculiar Hebrew style of the sect Note: Pesher is not Rewritten Bible; the biblical text is separated from the interpretation.

  6. Contemporizing • Pesher Contemporizes The original prophet was foretelling something about the contemporary time of the interpreter. The original context is ignored. New Testament also does this. This makes pesharim valuable as a historical source for the Qumran period.

  7. Prophetic • The Sect believed that the Teacher of Righteousness had prophetic power of interpretation. • לואׄ[ האמינו בדברי] מורה ^ה^צד֯קהׄ מפיא אל Pesher Habakuk 3:2-3
