The Seven Secrets About Vanlife Only a Handful of People Know Vanlife isn’t always sunshine and rainbows. If you follow the #vanlife trend, you already know how amazing it looks. The appeal of van life is great! However, that doesn't mean it's perfect either. Here we list 7 things that will help your fellow road trippers get by a little easier. 1. Upfit Your Van! Depending on how and what you use your camper van for, upfitting your van is a great solution to keep organized with storage while making it LOOK good. So what is “upfitting” exactly? A van uplift is a professional storage system that is built within the van to fit the owner's needs. This can help hide storage or shelves to provide easy access tools and so much more. When you’re ready to uplift your van, make sure you get it from single manufacturer! You want to make sure all of the pieces are able to fit within your van, and chances are, not everything will piece together if they’re bought from different manufacturers. Camper vans usually start as cargo vans and the vehicle manufacturers typically do not “upfit” their vans. Manufacturers produce the cargo vans which are then converted into camper vans. 2. No Shower in the Van? No problem Some van lifers use a built-in shower system in their van, but if you don’t have a shower like that in your van, there are plenty of other options! • Get a Gym Membership • Use campsite showers • Truck Stops • Portable Pop Up Shower
3. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff If you’re traveling with another person, chances are you will get annoyed from not having enough physical space. Everyone needs their space and living in a van doesn’t make everything go smoothly. That's just the reality of #vanlife Make sure to take some time for yourself. Give breaks and do things to help avoid the inevitable annoyances and arguments. If you feel yourself getting annoyed by the small stuff, take a step back and make time for yourself. 4. Freecamsites.net or thedyrt.com These sites are such a great way to find free camping spaces to park and camp overnight for free. Another great app is called Dyrt, which lets you know of awesome BLM land to camp for free - although most do not have bathrooms so prepare for that! 5. Ear Plugs or Headphones Chances are if you are in a more populated area like a National Park, it’s going to be loud at night. If you’re sleeping near a road, definitely bring earplugs to cancel out cars passing by. Either way, you deserve a little peace of mind.
6. Expect the Unexpected If you’re traveling on the open road, there’s going to be quite a few times where there’s no service and the map on your phone isn’t working. So always be prepared! • Have a full tank of gas before heading out • Jumper cables • Extra batteries • A spare tire 7. Been on the road for a while? Take long breaks! Sometimes van life can be a bit chaotic. Most of the time it’s go, go, go, and always living in the moment. Living in the moment can be great! Except we’re all human and we get exhausted at a certain point. Taking breaks from being in a van is worth it and will leave you feeling refreshed and ready to go after. Getting a hotel, Airbnb, or staying at a family or friend's house for a long period of time will help you reflect on other needs. A lot of van lifers admit to taking longer breaks Have any questions for Drifter? Leave a comment or send us a message on how we can help! Contact us HERE.
