  4. 4,8 Millions of inhabitants, 10.5 % of the total Spanish population • Immigrants: 727.080 (14.9%) EU: 386.054 Non EU: 341.017 Increase of 68.000 during 2006 • Valencia: third largest city in Spain • In our Region, Spanish and Valencian are the co-official languages. • In Spain: 1 official language, Spanish, plus 4 co-official languages: Basque, Catalan, Galician and Valencian. Valencian Region: located on the Mediterranean coast of Spain part of the so-called Mediterranean Arch, one of the fastest economic growth rates in the EU

Barrage of Tous www.icv.gva.es WATER REUSE IN THE VALENCIAN REGION • 505.600.000 m3 of sewage waters were treated in the Region of Valencia in 2005. • 270.000.000 m3 of sewage waters treated in 2005 were recycled. • An average of 71’3% of consumed water was recycled  Agriculture, gardening, city cleaning... • Increase of 76% in treated water in 10 years • 1995  206 sewage farms, 285 Hm3 treated. • 2005  409 plants, more than 500 Hm3. • Goals: treat 80% of the water consumedand recycle 70% of the treated water.

FIRST MAJOR MEDITERRANEAN INPUT IN EU WATER POLICY

AER Working Group on water • Led by the Valencian Region, more than 40 regions have expressed their interest • Support to implement the commitments reached by the local and regional governments in the World Water Forum in Istanbul, 20th March 2009 • Ideas: drafting of a Local and Regional charter on water and preparation of a AER award for water management • Online platform of resources and best practices. Intermed CommissionConference of Peripheral Maritime Regions Intermed group on water • Led by the Valencian Region. • 54 regions members of the Commission, representing Med European countries, Morocco, Tunisia and Lebanon • Goal: Mediterranean input. Promotion of Mediterranean positions on EU policies related to water. • Structure of co-operation for joint projects related to water management. • Adoption of the Mediterranean vision on water for the 5th World Water Forum of Istanbul 2009 More information:www.medregions.organdwww.uegva.info

Programme • • • Details of study visits Wednesday 26 ‘WATER BUS’ parked in the venue of the Summer School • The Water bus is an initiative funded by the social fund of the savings bank CAM. • Goal: Discover one of the initiatives oriented to raise awareness in the children and general public about water saving and water efficiency at home. • www.cam.es STUDY VISITS

Programme • • • Details of study visits Thursday 27 Water management: Modernization of irrigations systems. • Visit to the Azud of St. Quiteria, Mijares river and modernized irrigated installation. • Goals • Know on-site how the irrigators of Castellón have reduced their water consumption by 40%. • See modernization of irrigation systems. Visit to one of the biggest water treatment plants in Europe and to the main wetland of the Spanish Mediterranean. • Examine the combination of use of tertiary treated water to restore and preserve the wetland. Programme • • • Details of study visits Tuesday 25 TEAM BUILDING ACTIVITY Water and the Millenium Development Goals Goals: • Allow the participants to know each other. • Raise awareness about the water as a global human need put in relation with the rest of the UN Millennium Development Goals. • Develop the empathy and the ability to understand the different personal situations and realities, but also the potential of every single person to improve the situation of mankind. Programme • • • • Details of social activities Saturday 29 VISIT TO ‘EL PLANTÍO’ ‘El Plantio’ – Green Valley Golf Resort is the first golf course in Europe as official partner of the European Sustainable Development Campaign by the European Commission. Its efforts for sustainability have been awarded by the AER. SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

Programme • • • • Details of social activities Saturday 29 VISIT TO THE PORT OF THE AMERICA’S CUP SOCIAL ACTIVITIES The whole architectonic ensemble, the surroundings, the renovated Royal Shipyards –antique harbor stores– and the large offer of restaurants and cafés have turned the harbor into one of the most touristic places all over the coast.

Programme • • • • Details of social activities Saturday 29 ‘AQUA IN AETERNUM’ PRINTMAKING CONTEST INTER NOS POLYGRAPHIC IN CHESTE, VALENCIA SOCIAL ACTIVITIES • Goals: • Introduce the Poligráfico as a European reference centre in printmaking. • Promoting a more united Europe by strengthening the bonds in the cultural and artistic area. • Present the International printmaking contest ‘Aqua in aeternum’
