  12. Forces Behind Imperialism • Bubble Chart Graphic Organizer • Using your laptop you will use Inspiration 8 to create a bubble chart graphic organizer on ideas and beliefs that drove imperialism and caused European countries to take over other nations. • We will set the graphic organizer up together and you will use the section “Forces Driving Imperialism” on pages 340 and 341 to find the reasons behind imperialism.

  13. Reason for Imperialism • Industrial Revolution • gave European countries a reason to take over other countries. • European countries needed new countries to trade with and more resources to industrialize.

  14. Reason for Imperialism • Belief in Superiority • Europeans believed they were better than everyone else. • This belief is called racism

  15. Reason for Imperialism • Social Darwinism • The strongest humans survive and the weakest humans died. • Europeans believed that if they took over weaker people they could help them become stronger.

  16. Reason for Imperialism • European Technology • Guns – Europeans fought against Africans easily. • Steam Powered Vehicles – Europeans could travel around the country quickly. • Medicine – stopped Europeans from getting sick due to African diseases.

  17. Reason for Imperialism • Problems in Africa • Too many different languages • Different religions • Fighting over land, water, and food • All stopped Africans from uniting to fight European control

  19. Dividing Up Africa • Map Questions • Looking at the map, list three problems you think could have occurred since countries were so close together. • Which country (s) controlled the most territory? Why do you think they did? • Which country (s) controlled the least amount of land? Why? • Do you think African people were treated the same, since so many countries controlled them? How were they treated?

  20. Berlin Conference • European countries feared war over Africa so 14 countries met together. • European countries created rules to follow for dividing up Africa. • Could conquer land only by telling other nations. • Did not considered what the Africans wanted.
