Starting Point: Advanced Training at TUB 2003 - 2009 Internal program for advanced training since 2003 • Online calendar of trainings and workshops • Trainings are open to all staff members • Library covers expenses; participation always during working hours • Organizational and Technical Infrastructure, Training room • Approx. 20 Courses p.a., 10 up to 60 participants • Courses in four areas: Specialist Knowledge for Librarians / Background Knowledge for Librarians / Social Skills / General Education • Internal (from TUB) and External Lecturers • Teaching Methods: Lectures / Face-to-Face-Teaching / Excursions / Workshops • Supplemented by In-House Internships for Staff Members Dr. Caroline Leiß, IATUL Seminar 2010

New Services: Department of Information Services For example August 2009: foundation of a new department of information services Objectives: • Elaborate a portfolio of client-specific information services • Implement a team approach (library information teams / „BITs“) • Use different communication channels like SMS, chat, phone, face-to-face-interaction, blended learning, e-learning, … • Develope and manage information services in different teaching methods like face-to-face-training, blended learning, e-learning, … • Proactive approach: seek alliances with patrons and faculty • Set clear performance indicators and establish a quality assurance system Dr. Caroline Leiß, IATUL Seminar 2010

New Services: Department of Information Services What services are they supposed to offer? • Proactive approach to patrons • target groups: all library users, especially high schools, students and faculty • level: all levels from basic to specialized • languages: english and german • communication channels: spoken (face-to-face, phone) and written (chat, e-learning, …) • thematic areas: general reference, guided tours, literature search, databases, scientific writing, literature administration program, all subjects covered by TUM faculties  transliteracy training Dr. Caroline Leiß, IATUL Seminar 2010

New Challenges: Qualification Profile for Information Professionals Very specific training requirements for 54 persons from different departmens, with different educational background, different work experiences, abilities and preferences (21 persons in infocenter, 33 persons in BITs). • development of a structured and comprehensive vocational training program for all persons working in Information Services • integration into a vocational training program for all staff members • requirements: basic training and specific trainings for teams and individuals  what are the key competencies for information librarians? Getting started: Advanced Training for new Information Librarians Preliminary results: 120 events for library users from september to december 2010 (guided tours; basic and advances courses in literature research in online catalogue, databases and internet; reference management software; document delivery services). 2200 participants (students, staff from faculties and university administration, pupils, teachers)
