Some information about the city • Ancona is the capital of Marche Region, one of the 20 regional administrations of Italy • It is located in the centre of Italy, overlooking the Adriatic Sea • Inhabitants of the city are 100.915 • It is a city full of history, monuments and art • The city is built on an elbow-shaped promontory, and it was founded by Greek people from Siracuse on 4th century BC. Because of the promontory, they gave to the city the name Ἀγκών, "Ankón” that in Greek language means elbow

Cultural places(1/2) • Cathedral of San Ciriaco:It is most representative monument of Ancona, a pleasant mix of Romanesque, Gothic and Byzantine style, built on the foundations of a temple of the fourth century B.C. and a pre- Christian church • Church of Santa Maria della Piazza: Itisa masterpiece of Romanesque art, with its impressive façade • Arch of Trajan: a Roman arch erected in the first century A.D • Elders’ Palace 13th Cent: erected in 1270 based on a plan by Margaritoned’Arezzo in Romanesque-Gothic Style • Roman Amphitheatre 1st Cent A.D.: the construction started during the period of Octavian Augustus and then modified druing the Trajan’s Age

Cultural places(1/2) • Plebiscito square or Pope’s square:It is one of the most important place of Ancona • Fountain of Calamo or “The 13 Spouts” 16th Cent.: built in 1560, it is made of thirteen big mask: 12 of bronze and 1 of stone representing satyrs and fauns • Passetto: It is the First World War Memorial rise in Piazza IV Novembre. It has an extraordinary view overlooking the sea and the Conero Riviera • Mole Vanvitelliana 18th Cent.: It is located in the Port area. It was a “Lazaretto” but today is the venue of exhibitions and cultural events. It hosts the Tactile Museum Omerothat allowing the blind to approach art • Delle Muse Theatre 19th Cent.: built in 1826 according to a plan of Pietro Ghinelli from Senigallia

  6. Sea life: «Conero Riviera» (1/3) • The city has several beaches. The most central is called Passetto, with large white rocks;  gravel beaches are towards the south of Ancona • The most famous beaches of the “Conero Riviera” are: • Portonovo Bay: is one of the prettiest white pebbled beach on the whole of the Northern Adriatic shore. The strand is split in two by the FortinoNapoleonico, a squat, blank-eyed fort built in 1808 by Napoleon's Italian Viceroy to fight off English ships • “Della Vela” beach: is a spectacular beach with a rock, shaped like a sail • “Mezzavalle” beach: is a wild and beautiful beach for the most brave people

  7. Sea life: «Conero Riviera» SIROLO (2/3) Other beaches part of “Conero Riviera” are located in the territory of two small villages: Sirolo and Numana. SIROLO: It has a pretty medieval centre with narrow, colorful alleys and a tree-lined, balcony piazza that teeters high above the sea. The Urbani beach (Blue Flag 2016) is protected by a round rocky barrier during winter storms. Here starts the San Michele beach(Blue Flag 2016), that is a gravel beach, with clear water and lined with umbrellas and deckchairs in high season. SassiNeri beach(Blue Flag 2016) is a long, gravel  strand of beach characterized by blocks of black schists (hence the name) of sedimentary origin on the shore. The Two Sisters beach is Sirolo’s most picturesque beach, named after the two twin rocks emerging from the sea; it is the first white beach to be found of the southern flank of Mount Conero.

  8. Sea life: «Conero Riviera» NUMANA (3/3) NUMANA: is located along the central Adriatic Sea, at the southern slopes of Mount Conero. The historic center is situated in the area called Numana Alta, as it is at the top of a cliff overlooking the sea; NumanaBassa includes the area below the marina.The Numana Alta beach includes two bays: the so calledSpiaggiola and Beach of the Friars; Numanabassa beach stretches south of the port of Numana until the village of Marcelli, that is equipped with numerous beach resorts, campings and holiday clubs. Numanaboasts a nice marina, that can hold up to 800 small-medium tonnage boats; it has a pier reserved for sailing boats and several piers for motor boats.

  9. TypicalDishes The most popular dishes are the stoccafissoall'anconetana (salt cod) and the fish soup. The moscioloselvatico(wild mussel) from Portonovo, is protected by Slow Food Association. The spaccasassi is a kind of wild fennel with strong aroma, typical of National Park of Monte Conero. The most typical wine made in the area is Rosso Conero, a full-bodied red wine produced around the Conero peninsula. The most famous white wine is VerdicchiodeiCastelli di Jesi produced in the territory of Jesi and its medieval castels (near Ancona).
