  1. GENESIS final conference Balázs Horváth DG ENV C.1 Water Unit

  2. Groundwater and Dependent Ecosystems: New Scientific and Technological Basis for Assessing Climate Change and Land-use Impacts on Groundwater (GENESIS) • FP7 research project 2009-2014 (€9M) • 25 partners of 17 countries in Europe • Some WG GW members in advisory board • Final conference in Prague on 5-7 March 2014 • Conference presentations in CIRCABC (large file) • All deliverables soon in www.thegenesisproject.eu

  3. Final conference Main sessions of the conference covered: • groundwater dependent ecosystems; • environmental tracers and their role in groundwater management; • fighting groundwater pollution; • climate change and land use modelling; • groundwater management in practice The project previously suffered from too much bottom-up approach and it was hard to see how the different case studies would complement each other but in this last conference some case studies showed interesting integrated results.

  4. Case studies with integrated approach (1) • Vosvozis lagoon, Greece • Saline intrusion + agricultural pressures. Stakeholder groups involved, but not aware of RBMPs. Farmers willing to act. • Mancha, Spain • Over-abstraction, fertilizer pollution, high N concentrations. Impacts of CC and land use examined, different measures efficiency tested: fertilizer standards / taxes, emission taxes; CBA, uncertainty analysis. • Czestochowa, Poland • Only 40% households are connected to sewer – quality problems. Water services are underpriced. Willingness to pay helps establishing acceptable level of charges.

  5. Case studies with integrated approach (2) • Rokua, Finland • Residence times (0-73 months) of 67 lakes were calculated from isotopes data. Ecological status of the lakes is determined by groundwater. Recharge simulation and conflict mediation among stakeholders. • Po fontanilli, Italy • the DPSIR approach was used with different models to establish a conceptual model of pathways of these groundwater-fed springs used for agricultural water supply. Measures tested: different crop-rotation, irrigation systems. • Dalyan lagoon, Turkey • Contribution of different water sources (lake, sea, groundwater) was quantified. Then an ecological assessment of existing species was carried out. They will continue the work on determining the groundwater dependency and needs of some other species.

  6. Examples on aquifer andecosystem interaction Swiss and Swedish case Rokua Geopark – Finland Niepolomice Forest in Bogucice, Poland Vosvozis river basin, Greece

  7. Informal talks • It seems that the project formulated a European-wide network of experts • Links to implementation of EU legislation gained importance towards the end of the project • The Swedish geological survey just found out that they established a very similar groundwater dependent ecosystem typology to the one used in France and in Scotland

  8. Deliverables • All deliverables by summer • 6 policy briefs already thereon GDEs, economics, sustainable use, climate change and land use, tracers: http://www.bioforsk.no/ikbViewer/page/prosjekt/tema?p_dimension_id=16858&p_menu_id=16904&p_sub_id=16859&p_dim2=97144 • Deliverables: http://www.bioforsk.no/ikbViewer/page/prosjekt/tema?p_dimension_id=16858&p_menu_id=16904&p_sub_id=16859&p_dim2=23505 • Some data and a toolbox is also uploaded
