  1. Why discuss the topic? • In 2007, an alliance was formed between the Illinois Suicide Prevention Strategic Planning Committee and the Illinois Suicide Prevention Coalition. • The mission was to reduce suicide and its stigma throughout Illinois. • This stigma restricts prevention and intervention because it is not discussed. • Suicide is the third leading cause of death for youth between the ages of 10 and 24, accounting for more deaths than all natural causes combined.

  5. Life Can Be Overwhelming! Don’t Give Up! • Everyone fails at some point in his or her life, so use failure as a way to learn. • Find something you enjoy, like hanging out with friends, join a team or group, find others who appreciate what you delight in. • Take deep breaths, stop and think, talk to supportive people. • Read a book, write down your feelings in a journal, watch a funny movie or TV show • DO ANYTHING THAT WILL HELP YOU BRIGHTEN YOUR OUTLOOK !!

Why choose a permanent solution to a temporary problem • Suicide is the third leading cause of death for youth between the ages of 10 and 24, accounting for more deaths than all natural causes combined. • Not all suicides can be prevented but opening lines of communication can and does save lives. What can put you at higher risk to harm yourself? • Feeling Hopeless, Helpless, or very unhappy • Isolating self from friends and family • Severe family Conflicts and abusive treatment from caregivers • Perceived multiple losses or failures • Ostracized and or bullied by peers Risk factors obtained from www.suicide.org

  8. We can protect those at risk By being supportive, listening, and expressing our concerns respectfully and compassionately.

Extra Ways to Protect those at Risk Task you can complete to be a optimistic person • Promoting Close Family Bonds • Creating a strong sense of self worth • Developing a encouraging sense of self control • Stable Environment • Emotional Stability (ie. Not being impulsive or short tempered) • Restricted access to lethal methods Be a good friend Use effective problem solving skills Stick up for those that are being bullied or harassed Set a positive example with cooperative behaviors Protective Factors obtained from National Association of Social Worker Project Shift

  11. Promote optimism and a positive outlook towards the future. Become a supportive friend by inspiring kindness and understanding Model positive coping skills, encourage strong problem solving and conflict resolution tactics

Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. You have only just begun. You have so much farther to go. A mistake can always be turned into a lesson. AND YOU ARE TOO important, loved and need to be gone too soon!!
