  3. Curriculum Night Welcome to Mr. Phillips’s Math 7 Class

About Mr. Phillips • Graduated with a degree in Bilingual Multicultural Education with an emphasis on Mathematics and Second Language Acquisition from Northern Arizona University • Fluent Spanish speaker and love traveling to use it and meet new people • Love sports, coached ultimate frisbee, soccer, kickball, capture the flag, ice hockey, and track and field • My philosophy in teaching is simple; “Work hard, be kind, always do your best, have fun, and enjoy learning!”  

  5. Math Supplies • Set of 4 dividers/tabs for binder (Math) • Math college ruled notebook (purchase 2-3 right now, on sale!) • Dry erase markers and eraser • Highlighters • Scissors • Tape

  6. Math Notebook 3-Ring Binder (D-Ring Preferred) 4 Tabs: (labeled with below) • BW/HW • McGraw • SG • Assessments Inside the plastic covers: • Math Reference Packet (available on my website to print out!) • Decorated/Personalized • First name, last name, class period, school year, and teacher’s name labeled on cover in permeant marker (Sharpie!) • 3 pages of table of contents labeled at top: Ch, Title, Page #. If your student is absent, please have the student go to my website to copy the notes for the day!

Typical Day • Students get out agenda/planner, get their supplies out, put backpacks away, do bellwork (warm-up), review homework, lesson, then homework for the night. • Students work on bellwork(warm-up) • Go over homework • Math lesson • Students take notes and add to interactive notebook • Students given a task to complete • Teacher circulates, working with students, offering tips, suggestions, hints • Whole class discussions and direct instruction as needed • Reflection of learning

  8. Homework Policy • Work done in interactive notebook • Show all work and steps • Include thorough explanations if needed • If a graph is needed, do not sketch it…attach a graph grid to your homework paper!

  9. College prep program • Honor math class • Extra parental help as needed • Faster pace • Mastery of the district curriculum • Extra challenge to prepare for success at the next levels • No Rescue Policy! – which means cannot call parent for missing work

Grading Policy Standard for ACP • Homework is corrected, but not graded • It’s not enough to just do the homework…it must be neat, organized, and all work shown • Grades are based on mastery of the curriculum 30% Formative Assessments (Quizzes) 60% Summative Assessments (Tests)                         10% In class Work

  11. Studying Help • Infinite Campus • There are helpful websites on my website • Before school math help in the library at 7:30 by various math teachers • Making an appointment with Mr. Phillips for after school • Conferencing on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday during school day

  12. What students can do if they don’t understand • Ask questions • Look over interactive notebook and examples • Ask for help at home • Call a friend • Research outside options such as private tutoring • Go online
