  4. The Waco VA is “the” place for caring • In operation for 73 years • Veterans with serious mental help needs consistently increase • Over 17,000 veterans from the Central Texas area have come to Waco for treatment • Provides more long-term care than any other VA facility in the country

  5. Basis for Development of Continuum Care • 25 out of 26 of the residential care homes are in Waco in addition to those living in their own homes • State and local facility mental health bed capacity is extremely limited. Most are unable to accept patients 85% of the time

  6. Basis for Development of Continuum Care • Amount of patients with PTSD increased 42% from 1998 to 2003 • Needed treatment programs for women • Impact of the War on Terror with soldiers returning to Ft. Hood needing treatment
