Red Marrow • Location: • Infant – cavities of most bones • Adult – spongy bone in epiphyses of skull, ribs, sternum, clavicles, vertebrae, & hipbones • Hematopoiesis: • Erythrocytes (RBC’s) • Leukocytes (WBC’s) • Platelets
Yellow Marrow • Location: • Medullary cavity • Fat storage in adults • When needed, can convert into red marrow
Bone Marrow Transplant • Treats blood disorders • May follow radiation or chemotherapy that destroys existing marrow • Three methods: • Cells removed from spongy bone of donor • Stem cells separated from blood of donor • Stem cells from umbilical blood of infant • Cells are injected into patient & establish new red marrow in bones
