  1. der-words, ein-words & adjective endings Jetzt geht’s los!

  2. der-words, ein-words & adjective endings DER-words and ein-words are called FUNCTION words. Functions that they show include: 1. gender (masc., fem. or neut.) 2. case (Nom, Acc, Dat, Gen) 3. number (sing. or plur.) We will practice just Nominative forms in this show, because they are the most complicated. (They are also used for Accusative, except masc. sing. acc.)

  3. der-words, ein-words & adjective endings Note the following DER-words. Function endings are in RED: Der Professor heißt Schmid. (masc.) Das Baby trinkt gern Milch. (neut.) Die Mama ist nicht zu Hause. (fem.) Die Studenten gehen gern ins Kino. (plur.)

  4. der-words, ein-words & adjective endings der-words Der-words take the same function endings as der: Welcher Mann ist dein Freund? — Dieser Mann ist mein Freund. Welches Buch hast du lieber? — Dieses Buch hier. Masc. Neut. Fem. Plur. Welche Bluse ist schöner? — Diese Bluse hier im Fenster. Welche Freunde spielen heute? — Diese drei Freunde hier.

  5. der-words, ein-words & adjective endings der-words Jeder Student macht die Arbeit. Nicht jedes Kind lernt gut in der Schule. Ist jede Schülerin von der Gruppe hier? Alle Babys lieben die Mutter. (note: jeder > ALLE in plural!)

  6. der-words, ein-words & adjective endings ein-words EIN-words show the function endings only in the fem/plur. form. Masc. and neut. have NO ending. They are defective in this way. (You CAN tell, though, that a word is either masc. or neut. if the EIN-word has no ending. However, which it is cannot be said precisely, unlike the DER-words.) We will use a dot (•) to indicate NO ENDING. This is of course never written; it’s just to help you recall that there is no ending to give function information.

Nein. Meine Kinder sind beide in Bielefeld. Und wo leben Ihre Kinder? Thomas, wie viel kostet dein• Auto? Und deine CDs?

  9. Adjs. der-words, ein-words & adjective endings Adjective Endings Adjectives take DER-endings if they appear alone before a noun. This is logical, since there is no function word to show case, gender & number. der-word: Dieser Käse ist sehr gut. adj. alone: Holländischer Käse ist sehr gut. der-word: der Wein adj. alone: kalter Wein

  10. Adjs. der-words, ein-words & adjective endings der-word: Welches Bier schmeckt besser? adj. alone: Schmeckt deutsches Bier besser? dieses Wasser heißes Wasser der-word: adj. alone:

  11. Adjs. der-words, ein-words & adjective endings der-word: Jede Schokolade ist hier sehr gut. adj. alone: Belgische Schokolade ist sehr gut. der-word: adj. alone: welche Suppe warme Suppe

  12. Adjs. der-words, ein-words & adjective endings der-word: Die Oliven sind teuer aber gut. adj. alone: Griechische Oliven sind fantastisch. diese Kleider schicke Kleider der-word: adj. alone:

  13. Adjs. der-words, ein-words & adjective endings If an ein-word that has NO ENDING (masc./neut.) appears before an adjective (mein•, unser•, ihr•, etc.), we have already seen that it does not convey sufficient function information. The adjective then has to show the function and do the work: adj. alone: kleiner Thomas ein-word: mein•kleiner Thomas adj. alone: deutscher Wein ein-word: kein•deutscher Wein

  14. Adjs. der-words, ein-words & adjective endings adj. alone: kaltes Bier ein-word: ein•kaltes Bier adj. alone: amerikanisches Talent ein-word: unser•amerikanisches Talent

  15. Adjs. der-words, ein-words & adjective endings adj. alone: französischer Kognak ein-word: sein•französischer Kognak adj. alone: leckerer Kakao ein-word: euer•leckerer Kakao

  16. Adjs. der-words, ein-words & adjective endings adj. alone: schlechtes Wetter ein-word: kein•schlechtes Wetter adj. alone: gepresstes Öl ein-word: Ihr•gepresstes Öl

  17. Adjs. der-words, ein-words & adjective endings If a function word (der- or ein-word) with an unambiguous function ending appears before the adjective, the adjective is OFF THE HOOK and does NOT NEED TO SHOW FUNCTION. The function word has taken care of it. Der-words are always unambiguous. Only ein-words can be deficient (masc./neut.)

  18. Adjs. der-words, ein-words & adjective endings If a function word (der- or ein-word) with an unambiguous function ending appears before the adjective, the adjective is OFF THE HOOK and does NOT NEED TO SHOW FUNCTION. The function word has taken care of it. In this instance, the adjective takes SECONDARY endings (“weak” endings): PLURAL: SINGULAR: e en

  19. Adjs. der-words, ein-words & adjective endings Derneue Professor heißt Schmid. Daskleine, süße Baby trinkt gern Milch. Diejunge Mama ist nicht zu Hause. Meinejüngere Schwester kommt mit. Wo lebt deineandere Tante?

  20. Adjs. der-words, ein-words & adjective endings • welcheintelligenten Frauen? • diemeisten Studenten • keinegutenamerikanischen Oliven • unserealtenitalienischen Freunde

  21. Adjs. der-words, ein-words & adjective endings Welcherdicke Mann ist dein Freund? Dieseraltedicke Mann neben Kurt. Welches Buch hast du lieber? Diesesneueinteressante Buch hier. Welcheseidene Bluse ist schöner? Dieseteureblaue hier im Fenster. (“Bluse” is implied here:this expensive blue one) Meinealterote Bluse ist nicht sehr schick.

  22. Adjs. der-words, ein-words & adjective endings • Welche Freunde spielen heute? • Diese drei guten Freunde hier. • deinebestenimportierten Weine • unserenettendeutschen Nachbarn • allesüßenkleinen Babys

  23. Adjs. der-words, ein-words & adjective endings jedereinzelne Student nicht jedeskleine Kind jedeschönerothaarige Schülerin

  24. Adjs. der-words, ein-words & adjective endings Note: Once you have referred to a noun, you often then omit it when you refer to it again. The function word and adjective ending remain the same as usual. This is like adding the word ‘one’ in English: Welches Bier ist besser?Diesesdeutsche. = This German one. Kommt dein•älterer Bruder heute? Nein, mein•jüngerer. = my younger oneNein, derjüngere. = the younger one

  25. der-words, ein-words & adjective endings Das ist alles! Viel Glück!
