  1. Terminology changes in a nutshell … Authors: Date: 2008-09-09 Guido R. Hiertz et al., Philips

  2. Abstract Here, we document the changes to the terminology of the current 802.11s draft. This document summarizes the changes that have been applied to the “Word-conversion” of the 802.11s draft 2.01. As it contains the full draft, the latter document must not be uploaded to https://mentor.ieee.org/802.11/. Thus, we provide an overview of the changes applied. Guido R. Hiertz et al., Philips

  3. General changes (1) • Change “mesh”, “mesh network” and “WLAN mesh” were meant as “a wireless mesh network based on 802.11” to “Mesh Basic Service Set” or “MBSS” • Use the term “mesh” as adjective • Rational • Base standard (& (approved) amendments) has several kind of STAs • HT STA (802.11n) • QoS STA (802.11-2007) • Dependent STA (802.11y) • … Guido R. Hiertz et al., Philips

  4. General changes (2) • Replace all occurrences of MP with mesh STA resp. mesh station • Replace all occurrences of MAP with mesh AP resp. mesh Access Point • Replace all occurrences of MPP with portal • There is no mesh specific portal • Portals connect 802.11 and non-802.11 networks • See 802.11-2007 • Update definition section • Update abbreviation section Guido R. Hiertz et al., Philips

  5. General changes (3) • Use MBSS whenever the whole network is meant • Example: • Mesh Key Distributor becomes  MBSS Key Distributor • Etc. • Form logical groups & give them a name • The MBSS is the set of mesh STAs that cooperate on the formation of the MBSS • A mesh STA is a member of exactly one MBSS Guido R. Hiertz et al., Philips

  6. Changes to 5.2.11 • Renaming • Mesh BSS: The 802.11 Wireless mesh network • Rational • Two explanatory occurrences of “802.11 Wireless mesh network” before MBSS is introduced • Used as general description • Avoids 802.11s specific terminologies before explaining them • Clause introduces the concept of • Mesh Basic Service Set (MBSS) • Groups mesh STAs • Mesh STAs • Are members of an MBSS Guido R. Hiertz et al., Philips

  7. Further changes to 5.2.11 • New picture • Separate mesh STA • AP is an additional STA service Guido R. Hiertz et al., Philips

  8. WDS term – killed … • Delete the term “Wireless Distribution System” • Not useful • Confuses readers • In conflict with 802.11s Guido R. Hiertz et al., Philips

  9. Mesh ID • Replace “Mesh ID” by “Mesh BSSID” • Cohesive with BSSID • Refer back to base standard Guido R. Hiertz et al., Philips

  10. Clarify ToDS/FromDS bits • ToDS and FromDS bits set to 1 • “A data frame using the four-address MAC header format. This standard defines procedures for using this combination of field values for the MBSS only. In an MBSS, this bit combination indicates the presence of the Mesh Control information.” Guido R. Hiertz et al., Philips

  11. Changes to table 7-8 • Add columns that show which IE is used in which Basic Service Set • Independent (IBSS) • Infrastructure (beacon sent by AP) • Mesh (MBSS) Guido R. Hiertz et al., Philips

  12. Concurrent work – Integration of the resolution of outstanding comments • Replace all occurrences of MP with mesh STA resp. mesh station • Replace all occurrences of MAP with mesh AP • Replace all occurrences of MPP with portal • Instruct the editor to re-create the table of contents according to the changes applied Guido R. Hiertz et al., Philips

  13. Outstanding (1) • Some more changes to terms in MIB (Annex D) needed • Must be changed in remaining document too • Referring sections etc. • Provide changes to 10.3 MLME SAP interface • Will follow • Change table 7-58 • Add single column for MBSS • Has no CFP • Uses always QoS frames MBSS CP Mesh STA Guido R. Hiertz et al., Philips

  14. Outstanding (2) • Further changes to table 7-8 needed • Not finished yet Guido R. Hiertz et al., Philips

  15. References • Document 11-08-0895-00-000s • CIDs 340, 816, 867, 872, 964, 990, 1029, 1470, 1780, 1816 and many, many more Guido R. Hiertz et al., Philips
