  1. The Urgency to Prioritize Unreached People Groups (UPG) Great Need AdvocatesForTheUnreached.com JohnPitterle@yahoo.com 1 AdvocatesForTheUnreached.com/Perspectives_Mar-2016.ppt

  2. Fire 2

  3. Unevangelized, Evangelized, & Christian Provinces Where are UPG? < 50% evangelized > 50% evangelized, < 60% Christian > 60% Christian 3 From Atlas of Global Christianity

  4. Christians and the Unevangelized 1 dot = 50,000 adherents 4 From: Operation World, State of the Gospel, YLG 2006, Malaysia

  5. Where Are People with Fewer Evangelical Churches? (Better) Ratios of Population to Number of Estimated Evangelical Churches (by Country) (Worse) 5 Via Global Church Planting Network, 2010

  6. Why are UPG important? And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations*, and then the end will come. Matthew 24:14 And they sang a new song: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.” Revelation 5:9 as you look forward to the day of the God and speed its coming. 2 Peter 3:12 6 *nations = ethnos / ethne (Greek)

  7. Paul is a prototype cross cultural missionary It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else's foundation. Rather, as it is written: “Those who were not told about him will see, and those who have not heard will understand.” Romans 15:20, 21 Our hope is that, as your faith continues to grow, our area of activity among you will greatly expand, so that we can preach the gospel in the regions beyond you. For we do not want to boast about work already done in another man's territory. 2 Corinthians 10:14-16

  8. How does God see the unreached? Jesus > Lost sheep > Lost coin > Lost son Unreached And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left . . . Jonah 4:11

  9. Non-Christians Who Know a Christian 9 From Atlas of Global Christianity

  12. What Can We Learn from Real Life? • War • Troops keep advancing • Hospitals • Developed where they are lacking • Schools • Established so all have access • Drowning on Beach vs. Mid-Atlantic Storm • With rescuers nearby, one could get saved • Application • Body of Christ could learn these lessons 12

  13. Two Apartment Building Fires 13

  14. Why Are So Many Unreached? Few or No Ways to Hear the Gospel • Very few Christians / churches / missionaries • Nobody praying for them (by name) • No Bible or New Testament • No Jesus video/movie • Little or no Christian literature / tracts / radio / TV / internet 14

  15. The 10/40 Window represents a strategic area of the world for reaching UPGs • 90% are least evangelized • 80%-85% are poorest of the poor • 5 of every 6 UPG are in the 10/40 Window 15

  16. Major Religions in 10/40 Window Islam, Hindu, Buddhist, and Non-Religious 16

  17. Significant Persecution in 10/40 Window Countries with Most Severe Persecution of Christians 17 https://www.opendoorsusa.org/christian-persecution/world-watch-list/

  19. How Should Missionaries Be Distributed? 19

  20. Current Distribution of World’s People Groups 20 Data from Joshua Project

  21. Possible Allocation of Missionaries Maybe 75% Maybe 17% Maybe 8% 21 Data from Joshua Project

  22. Actual Missionary Distribution Not Proportional to % Unreached 9.6% Not even 40.5% 90.4% 22 Data from Joshua Project & Finishing the Task, The Unreached Peoples Challenge, Winter & Koch (2008)

  23. Recent Missionary Distribution World Population Foreign Missionaries 23 Data from Joshua Project & Finishing the Task, The Unreached Peoples Challenge, Winter & Koch (2008)

  24. Strategic Missions Why are roughly 90% of missionaries among reached peoples? Good question Short-term trips 24

  25. Fewest Missionaries Among Unreached 25 From: Operation World, State of the Gospel, YLG 2006, Malaysia

  26. These are real people These are not just numbers

  27. Few UPG Missionaries; Most Are Among the Evangelized 73% 27 73% statistic via Finishing the Task, The Unreached Peoples Challenge, Winter & Koch (2008)

  28. Does the Lord desire this missionary distribution? Should the rich get richer while the poor remain poor? 28

  29. Great Imbalance 29 From: Finishing the Task, The Unreached Peoples Challenge, Winter & Koch (2008 Fig.)

  30. Where are the majority of gospel / Christian resources? 30

  31. 1.6 x proportional share 0.034 x share 6.0 x proportional share Numbers show scale factor for proportional share 0.090 x fair share 0.0097 0.022 0.33 Data Source: World Christian Trends, Barrett & Johnson 0.29 0.97 x fair share Afghanistan 0.0035 x proportional share Via AdvocatesForTheUnreached.com Countries’ Portions of the World’s Christian Workers on a Per Person Basis

  33. What if Lord intended equal access for all to Good News? • America - 6 times proportional share of pastors and ministers • 1,533,000 Christian workers in U.S.* • 1.28 million or 83% could become foreign missionaries • Global equity *World Christian Trends, Barrett & Johnson, 2001 33

  35. Spending Far More on Buildings than on the Gospel • “American Christians spent enough money on new buildings to provide two Gospel booklets for every home in 180 worlds the size of ours!” • According to Dick Eastman and a 1977 Every Home for Christ publication sermon outline • 360 gospel booklets could have been provided or available to every home.  • That's about one gospel booklet for every home on every day of the year!  35

  36. What do we need in the U.S.? U.S. has more than her share of Christian finances, resources, and ministers. Our greatest need is NOT for more money to obey Great Commission Need obedient followers of Jesus with vision World-changers 36

  37. Great Need for More Emphasis on the Unreached Are There Enough Resources to Reach the Unreached? 37

  38. Ample Evangelism, But Misallocated Enough evangelistic activity to reach the whole world: • Every one in the world could hear a 1-hour presentation of the Gospel nearly every day Evangelistic activity is unevenly targeted (mostly at other Christians) • 86% of all Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists do not personally know a Christian. 38 Source: World Christian Encyclopedia From: Justin Long, www.Momentum-Mag.org, Aug. 2007 http://www.gordonconwell.edu/ockenga/research/documents/Lausanneinsert.pdf

  39. Self-Culture Focused Outreach Inadequate Cross-Cultural Missions • 95% of Christian ministers focus on their own people • Of the 5% who become missionaries, 73% focus on ethne which are majority Christian 39 From: Stan Park, Ethne ’06; Finishing the Task, The Unreached Peoples Challenge, Winter & Koch (2008)

  40. Many Unaware of Urgency for the Unreached • Majority of Christians still not aware of the challenge of the unreached • Many that are aware feel it is not their responsibility • Many church and mission leaders feel that missions to the unreached has been over-emphasized 40 From: Stan Park, Ethne ’06

  41. Will We Do Our Part? If current patterns continue, the unreached will still be a very significant part of the world’s population in 2030 and beyond “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Albert Einstein 41 From: Stan Park, Ethne ’06

  42. Missions Priorities Who are the unreached? Where are the people who have not heard about Jesus? Where should we prioritize taking the Gospel? 42

  43. Where Are Most of the Unevangelized? 43 From: Operation World, State of the Gospel, YLG 2006, Malaysia

  44. Prayer Targets - Countries with Largest Populations of Unreached People 2018 383 456 283 221 23 86 44 82 94 44 Unevangelized Population: 1.2 billion (India), 190 million (Pakistan, China), 162 million (Indonesia), 158 million (Bangladesh)

  45. David Barrett on Good Missions Stewardship In 1997, David Barrett estimated that “Dollar for dollar and hour for hour, the harvest coming from the 10/40 Window nations outstrips that from the rest of the world 100 to 1. That is, if the same money and time spent to win one person to the Lord in the West were put to use in the 10/40 Window nations, the effort would yield a harvest of 100 souls added to the kingdom of God. It is 100 times more cost effective, therefore, to reach those in the 10/40 Window. But for a sizable number of ethnolinguistic groups, cost-effectiveness reaches 1000 times more than in Western countries.” 45 The Move of the Holy Spirit in the 10/40 Window by Luis Bush and Beverly Pegues

  48. Where Are the People Who Have Not Heard About Jesus? Most Christians can more easily locate countries rather than people groups Joshua Project and WCT missions data 15,893 people groups 222 countries Evaluation of status of Christianity Country prioritization

  49. Weighting for Study of Country Prioritization 49
