Stages in Development of Brain Injury • Primary Injury • Occurs immediately at the moment of trauma • Biomechanical injury resulting from transfer of kinetic injury to scalp, skull and brain. • Secondary injury • Initiated at moment of injury but do not present clinically until later • Progressive • Can be prevented or minimized by timely intervention

Clinical Manifestations • Bruising, lacerations and avulsions of scalp – confirmatory of head injury occurrence • Bilateral periorbitalecchymosis (raccoon’s eye), CSF rhinorhea, CSF otorrhea and mastoid bruising (battle’s sign) – indications of basal skull fracture • Headache, brief amnestic episode, lucid interval
