  1. Functions through the GradesBy: Sarah Jo Schmitt & Christine Szafran *The full standards are typed out in your packet.

  2. Discussion Questions: • At what grade do you think functions are introduced? • What is the first thing you would teach when introducing functions?

  3. Elementary Grades (Pk-5) • Surprisingly, or maybe not so surprising, there is not mention of functions in the elementary school years.

  4. Middle School: Grade 6 • Once again there are no standards in Grade 6 that are related to functions.

  5. Middle School: Grade 7 • And…. Again no standards for functions found in Grade 7.

  6. Middle School: Grade 8 • Finally! Eighth Grade starts off the introduction of functions with the following standards: • 8.F.1 • 8.F.2 • 8.F.3 • 8.F.4 • 8.F.5

  7. High School: Algebra I • Algebra seems to be where functions are seen with the highest concentration: • F.IF.1 F.IF.7b F.BF.2 F.LE.3 • F.IF.2 F.IF.7e F.BF.3 F.LE.5 • F.IF.3 F.IF.8a F.BF.4a • F.IF.4 F.IF.8b F.LE.1a • F.IF.5 F.IF.9 F.LE.1b • F.IF.6 F.BF.1a F.LE.1c • F.IF.7a F.BF.1b F.LE.2

  8. High School: Geometry • Once again we are back to not discussing functions during Geometry. Let’s see how Algebra II does….

  9. High School: Algebra II • Yup, here is more standards for functions: • F.IF.4 F.IF.9 F.TF.5 • F.IF.5 F.BF.1b F.TF.8 • F.IF.6 F.BF.3 • F.IF.7b F.BF.4a • F.IF.7c F.LE.4 • F.IF.7e F.TF.1 • F.IF.8 F.TF.2

  10. High School: Fourth Course • The Fourth Course in High School is designed to set up students for college level mathematics. Here we also see functions discussed: • F.IF.7d F.TF.3 • F.BF.1c F.TF.4 • F.BF.4b F.TF.6 • F.BF.4c F.TF.7 • F.BF.4d F.TF.9 • F.BF.5
