    3. Objective To promote Marathi language and Culture through Marathi Shala.     4. Background BMM started Marathi Shala project 2 years ago. BMM had the curriculum developed by The International Language Learning Program of Toronto, Canada and already running Marathi Classes in USA. Our Mentor Mrs Sunanda Tumne has 30+ yr experience in conducting Marathi shala in Canada. 4 While BMM supported this shala for past 2 years it has been ongoing for past 30-35 yrs in Canada who have designed the curriculum.While BMM supported this shala for past 2 years it has been ongoing for past 30-35 yrs in Canada who have designed the curriculum.

    5. Bharati Vidyapeeth University, Pune This syllabus is approved by Bharati Vidyapeeth University, Pune. Bharati Vidyapeeth will award certificates to our students. We are in the process of getting the university to set up examinations for our school. 5

    6. Progress Until Now MMLA decides to start Marathi Shala. Decision to start Marathi Shala was announced during Ganeshutsov. On the basis of the response received we finalized the following three Centers: Simi Valley Cerritos Irvine 6 MMLA is the only Mandal to start 3 shala centers, we are starting with 3 centers and may expand more in future depending upon the need and response we receive from the communityMMLA is the only Mandal to start 3 shala centers, we are starting with 3 centers and may expand more in future depending upon the need and response we receive from the community

    7. Syllabus Spoken Marathi - for everyday use Numbers Writing in Marathi Grammar Sentence construction Reading Simple reading Also, we will focus on Marathi cultural aspects such as shloks, songs, poems, festivals, etc 7

    8. Course category and levels Elementary Intermediate & Advance Below are the criteria on which the children would progress from one level to another. Level 1 Student requires frequent teacher support and makes frequent errors Level 2 Student requires some teacher support and makes some errors Level 3 Student requires no teacher support and makes no errors 8 There are 3 categories in this course and under 3 categories there are 3 levels which makes total of 9 levels under this program.     9. Course Level Guidelines e.g.Elementary 9 This is an example for Elementary level, similarly there are criteria for Intermediate and Advance category. Under each Level one need to complete communication, reading and writing criteria to progress to next level and henceforth.     10. General Guidelines Children of 4 yrs (Potty trained only) and above - they should turn 4 in 2010. Each class will have 2-3 teachers + host Classwork, homework, Projects, etc Open house Parent-Teacher Meeting Exams will be conducted every 6 months. Report card will be given Certificates will be awarded after clearing level 10 Each class will have enough adults to cater to children. Just like regular class there will be class work, homework and projects. Open house is for the parents and teachers to discuss the progress of children to their parents.     11. General Guidelines contd Classes will be held for 9 months which is 3 quarters. Each quarter will be of 10 sessions 1st quarter Feb Mid April 2nd quarter Mid of April End of June 3rd quarter Mid of September - End of November. These dates are tentative and subject to change. 2 hrs sessions Total 30 sessions 11

Class Structure Breakdown of 2 hour Class: 15 min Homework 40 min Topic 20 min Break 30 min Fun activities, Story time, group activities, discussion, skit playing, elocution, etc 15 min Project/homework /assignment, etc 12 As per our experienced teachers, kids learn fast when they are taught through this medium. Kids would be motivated to come and learn when they are taught a certain topic in fun activities. Survey Decide class timings at THIS location Weekend classes Saturday/Sunday Preferred timing Please send your response by Dec 31st, 09 Refer to Survey Form 13 We have decided the time, now its your responsibility as a parent, as a host and as a teacher/support staff to select a day and time.     14. Teachers 2 teachers per class 1 support staff Teachers training will begin in 2nd week of January Teachers from all centers will meet every quarter 14 Each class will have 2-3 teachers. Each class will have children of different age groups and we require special teaching techniques to teach them in one class which is the reason we will require 2-3 teachers/class. We need teachers with skills to teach children of all age groups. Special training will be given to our teachers so that they can handle and teach children with different age groups in one class. Teachers meeting will help decide the syllabus and discuss the pros-cons and exchange ideas amongst themselves.Each class will have 2-3 teachers.
