Design Philosophy Current Planning and Implementation Initiative - IRPTN Efficent City Philosophy and Approach • The users (travellers, operators, and the city) are the focus of the plan and the system. • The IRPTN apart from moving people is about making the city more efficient by reducing trip lengths and cost of travel. • Consequently, planning for the IRPTN is about using the right mode for the job and developing a truly integrated transport network that embraces the range of modes and technologies available to enhance accessibility to opportunity in a cost effective way. • The system is to be technically and financially sustainable. Project Progress IMPLEMENTATION OF IRPTN PHASE 0 (RESTRUCTURING OF DURBAN TRANSPORT) • Gross based, contract document for IRPTN Phase 0 Operations have been prepared with award planned for 01 July 2011. The contract duration is three years. • The gross contract will be support by a fare revenue management contract. This contract will be award simultaneously with the Gross Contracts. • The Contract is structured to ensure compulsory participation by the minibus taxi and small bus operator industry. • Negotiations with the Minibus Taxi Industry has commenced • The service provider (ALMEX) of the ticketing system ALMEX OPTIMA has been appointed for IRPTN Phase 0. The business rules for the system has been defined. • 124 New Bus Fleet of which 34 will be BRT buses. The first buses will arrive during the 1st quarter of 2012 • IRPTN Phase 0 Depots are in the process of being upgraded        1T4643 - ETHEKWINI IRPTN

Project Progress THOUGH SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE ON NUMEROUS FRONTS, EFFORTS IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS WILL BE PLACED OVER THE COMING MONTHS: • More intense engagement with the minibus taxi industry specifically in terms Phase 0 • Completion of the Phase 1 Business Plan • Incorporated provincial bus operators into the implementation • More engagement with PRASA to get better alignment with the rail modernisation strategy. • Funding applications and confirmations for Phase 1 1T4643 - ETHEKWINI IRPTN
