The Progressive Era: Muckrakers, Reform, and Theodore Roosevelt's Lasting Impact

The Progressive Era was a response to the social and political issues of the Gilded Age. Muckrakers like Upton Sinclair and Ida Tarbell exposed corruption and unsatisfactory working conditions, driving public demand for reform. Theodore Roosevelt, America’s first progressive president, championed laws protecting consumers and workers, initiated trust-busting, and advocated for conservation. His actions led to the establishment of the FDA and the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act. Understanding these elements is crucial to grasping the significance of this transformative period in American history.
