  1. How to use: 1) Read a section of your class novel (around 5 to 20 pages). 2) Choose questions from ROWs (1,2,3) or COLUMNS (Events, Characters etc). -Questions become more challenging as you move down – so you may want to go across. -Write the questions out IN FULL in your books. -Or, if your explaining skills are feeling developed – go down a column. -Answer neatly in full sentences. Events Characters Themes/ Ideas Words The Author BONUS! Can you find any of these themes in your section? – loneliness, fear, family, nightmares, friendship, love, death, dreams, magic, bravery. Explain how words in the text reveal them? Describe the most important event in this section? Who is your favourite character? Give evidence and reasons why. Find your favourite word and explain its effect on the reader. Which character do you think is the author’s favourite? – explain why Is there an image / moment from your section that would make a good front cover? – design it. ROW 1 Design a quiz to test someone’s knowledge of your section? Come up with 3-5 questions. Add quotations to a picture that describe / suggest aspects of a characters appearance / personality Find your favourite adjective, verb or adverb and explainwhy the author used it. Write a question to the author about the section that you have just read. Write a one-sentence review to go on the front cover of the text. What do you think the main themes are in this section? ROW What is the most important thing we learn about a character. Explain why you think this? Which sentence, phrase or word does the most to convey the atmosphere? Explain how. Describe the effect the author trying to achieve and how does he want us to feel? Explain your answer. Describe your favourite moment in this section. Explain why it is your favourite? Describe: the lesson, your room, a dream, a place in the style of the author. 2 Choose a sentence which explores one of the themes and explain how it does this • Re-write a part of the section as: • A play script • Diary entries • -From 2 different perspectives. • -A poem • -A Haiku • -A Newspaper article • -A Facebook Page Can you find any similes or metaphors and explain why they are effective in the story? How would you describe the author’s style? How would you describe the way a character speaks and the words they use – explain what this tells us about them? How does the author use characters, settings, images and words to symbolise themes? Explain how and why they do this? Describe what you think will happen next. Explain why? (No peeking). ROW 3 Can you spot any patterns in the words used – e.g. Lots of words about food / taste? Describe these patterns – with evidence Does the author write in a particular genre? – (thriller, horror, fantasy, realistic etc) how would you describe it, explain how you know? Describe a turning points in the story – Explain why you think this ... Rewrite a short section from a different character’s perspective (using the first person “I”). Imagine a sequel to the story – write the opening page.

Choose a good word(s) to describe what the author is doing Choose a good word(s) to describe the feeling(s) he creates The author’s main purpose in this section is to create a tense atmosphere. They also describe the setting in detail... They build up a feeling of suspense in the first partof the extract and the descriptions make the setting seem creepy and gothic. Explain your answer. Choose words or ideas and explain their effect The author creates this feeling using short sentences and words like ‘creaking’, ‘pitch black’ and ‘chilling’. These words help him to make the gruesome setting come alive.

The boy was a model pupil, forgettable and easily forgotten, and he spent much of his spare time at the back of the English class where there were shelves of old paperbacks, and in the school library, a large room filled with books and old armchairs, where he read stories as enthusiastically as some children ate. Even the other kids forgot about him. If someone asked all the kids in Eight B to close their eyes and list the twenty-five boys and girls in the class, that Owens kid wouldn’t have been on the list.
