Determine Pipe Thread Gauge Using a Screw Pitch Gauge

Determining thread gauge of different equipment like pipes, nuts, and bolts helps in proper fitting, and in securing better connections. It also helps in fabrication, or purchasing the right parts for these pipes. This ensures better functioning and optimum integration. When the thread gauge is not calculated, and parts are fit together, it could lead to many operational as well as safety problems. A screw pitch gauge is used to accurately measure the thread gauge. Using it properly is extremely important to get precise results. This will help in better and tighter integration, resulting in longer service lives of hardware.

  1. Determine Pipe Thread Gauge Using a Screw Pitch Gauge. Introduction Determining thread gauge of different equipment like pipes, nuts, and bolts helps in proper fitting, and in securing better connections. 2. Steps. • Check the Measurement System on Screw Pitch Gauge 2. Measure the Pitch of a Thread 3. Measure a Known Size DMI: Dedicated to Pipe Fabrication Services since 1963

  3. 1. Check the Measurement System on Screw Pitch Gauge • The marking system on the screw pitch gauge might be different from the one you generally use. Examine the markings on the gauge. The unit of measurement will be mentioned on the gauge itself. It should be compatible with the rest of your equipment and calculations. 2. Measure the Pitch of a Thread • A gauge consists of several leaves with jaws that are used to fit into threads and measure the pitch. In order to measure the pitch, the subsequent steps should be followed: • Swing one of the leaves forward or unfold it. • Place the toothed edge of the leaf onto the threaded portion. The serrations of the gauge should fit comfortably within the threads of the pipe. If they are too loose or too tight, try the other leaves. • Continue this process until you find the exact fit. • The measurement will be mentioned on the leaf of the gauge. This is your reading. 4. 3. Measure a Known Size • Choose a pipe with a known gauge. Repeat Step 2. On measurement of the pipe, you should get the same reading as that, which is provided by the manufacturer. This will help you practice and perfect the measurement technique. DMI: Dedicated to Pipe Fabrication Services since 1963

  5. Tips. • For general applications, fine threads will be able to provide better integration compared to their coarser counterparts. On the other hand, coarser materials will provide a lasting and more secure connection when used in softer material. • This method can be used to check the thread gauge of pipes, screws, nuts, and bolts. • Storing the gauge correctly is important to increase its service life. Keeping it in good shape will help you get accurate results. • The method of thread gauge calculation of metric and inch (English) threads is different. TPI (Teeth per Inch) is the measurement of threads of pipes that are manufactured using the English production method. Gauge of metric threads is calculated by measuring the distance between two threads. Please make a note of the make of your hardware and gauge, and proceed accordingly. • Don’t press the gauge into the threads with extreme force. Lightly holding it on the pipe or screw will help you get better results without damaging your equipment. DMI: Dedicated to Pipe Fabrication Services since 1963

  6. Warnings: • When working with pipes, screws, bolts, and other equipment, it is important to wear appropriate safety gear and carry the right equipment. • Ensure that your work processes conform to the rules set by your local safety authorities.
