The Synoptic Gospels & John • 1 & only 1 of JC’s miracles is in all 4 Gospels: The Feeding of the 5 Thousand (Luke 9:10-17) • JC defies social norms • the Apostles serve the crowds, not the women • everyone ate together: Jews & Gentiles • JC alludes to the Eucharist • the similarity: JC blesses, breaks, & gives the bread to the disciples • the difference: • disciples in crowd get bread • disciples @ The Last Supper get JC’s Body & Blood

Jesus teaches the disciples (us) to pray always! pray for any reason & for any thing petition/thanksgiving/praise/forgiveness/…just to chat with Big G Upstairs… sometimes the best prayers are the “unanswered” ones God the Father will give you what you need even though it may not always be what you want

  10. The Fundamental Message: Justice • respect neighbors’ rights • honor their dignity as human beings • work to ensure the needs & rights of ALL major player to make this happen: The Holy Spirit continues the work of salvation

Jesus:An Advocate for the Underdog • the poor • illiterate so…following their faith & codes was challenging • anawim “ppl of the land” • many were shepherds • Luke: shepherds were VIP (1st to hear of JC’s birth) • sick • many believed evil caused illness (weren’t allowed in the Temple) • JC cures MANY • slaves • during JC’s time, they were POWs or ppl in debt • JC encouraged non-abusive relationships b/w owner & slave • sinners • were severely punished • JC tells them to STOP & REPENT • tax collectors • Jews who collected taxes for Rome • some collected a lil’ extra on the side so weren’t so popular w/ the ppl • JC eats w/ them • outcasts • The Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke10:25-37) • LESSON: True holiness is found in compassionate love despite social norms. • ignoring results in committing a social sin • negative attitudes & actions of groups that cause evil in society (sexism/racism/ageism/etc) • women • had limited legal & no political rights • JC recognizes women’s role in life as important & essential
