  2. Charlotte Informatics Partnership Conceived by industry and academic leaders Supported by Chancellor Phil Dubois A unique public-private, industry-academic partnership to establish the Charlotte region as a national hub for informatics

Coming Informatics Revolution • Informatics – Technologies and processes of turning (big) data into business insights, innovations and values • Examples • Wal-Mart’s customer tracking mines petabytes (10¹⁵) of data to understand customer preferences and buying behavior • NC DHH’s analysis of 2 million Medicaid records to detect fraud, estimated saving of $37 million in year one • Why should we care? (McKinsey, MIT Sloan, IBM, Economist) • $300 billion - annual value to US healthcare • 60% - potential increase in retailers’ operating margin • $100 billion – estimated data management and analytics market alone • Wal-Mart: data…raw material of business in 21st Century, an economic input…almost on par with labor and capital • Microsoft: we are at convergence of the “data-centric economy”

Why CIP a “Big Hairy Audacious Goal” for Charlotte? • Informatics will be a major industry! • Informatics industry exists not only in IT, but also in financial services, retail, energy, healthcare, … • CIP will enable a rising informatics industry in Charlotte • A strong informatics industry in Charlotte will • not only make industries in Charlotte more competitive • but alsoattract business investments, start-ups, and innovative companies • create 1000s high-end jobs • be a perfect way to diversify Charlotte economy

What Makes CIP Special? • Every major industry in the region depends on informatics for its competitiveness and survival • Charlotte has the need and market for informatics • Informatics industry is emerging; no region has claimed leadership • Timing is perfect and critical • Talent is key to informatics industry • NEEDED: additional 140,000 – 190,000 deep analytic talents; 1.5 million data-savvy managers; 50,000 healthcare IT professionals… (McKinsey, et al) • Growing UNC Charlotte makes large-scale informatics programs feasible • It will further UNC Charlotte as a key enabler and partner for Charlotte economic development

  6. Charlotte Informatics Partnership “Ask” • Stake your claim – make your organization a partner • Invest – provide financial contributions to CIP • Advocate – help to lead and to champion for public investment • Network – spread the word and help to bring in other organizations
