  2. Jefferson takes over • Tried to heal the nation that was divided between Federalists and Democratic Republicans. “Let us, then, fellow-citizens, unite with one heart and one mind… Every difference of opinion is not a difference of principle… We are all Republicans, we are all Federalists.”

  3. Jefferson’s beliefs • Small central-government • Give more power to “common man” • Agriculture economy, all about the farmer • Opposite of Europe who crammed into cities for industry

  4. Jefferson Shrinks government • Reduced government workers • Reduced military • Ended Federalist programs • Alien and Seditions Acts • Taxes (Whiskey Tax) • End government debt to the people

  5. Judicial Actions • Federal Judiciary Act of 1801 • Adams appointed many new judges before leaving office. • This left Federalists in charge of the courts • They strengthened government power under Chief Justice John Marshall • Marbury v. Madison • Supreme court is final authority on Constitution and has judicial review
