  1. Evolution of the Internet

  2. 1960s • U.S.Department of Defense • Created Arpanet - a group of networked computers • Need for global communication in case of enemy attack - Cold War with communist countries - Fear of Nuclear War

  3. Arpanet • Advanced Research Projects Agency Any one of the networked computers could connect Communication system in case of enemy attack Was text based, not point-and-click

  4. 1980s • Beyond defense • National Science Foundation created a network called (NSFnet) - Connected educational institutions & research labs in a network

  5. Internet is Born • Arpanet+ NFSnet Internet = Network of networks Connected by phone lines & trans-oceanic cables

  6. NOTE: As more and more people had access to ARPANET, it was no longer safe for military purposes. • As a result, MILnet, a military only network, was started in 1983. • NSFnet started to replace the slower ARPAnet (which was finally shutdown in 1990). • NSFnet formed the backbone of what we call the Internet today.

  7. 1990s • Use of Internet by general public Funding changed making it more affordable Development of WWW (point & click) made it easier to use Popularity of Internet exploded

  8. NOTE: The Internet's pace of adoption eclipses all other technologies that preceded it. • Radio was in existence 38 years before 50 million people tuned in; • TV took 13 years to reach that benchmark • Sixteen years after the first PC kit came out, 50 million people were using one • Once it was opened to the general public, the Internet crossed that line in four years." • - quote from the U.S. Department report "The Emerging Digital Economy".

  9. Internet or WWW? • Internet is network of networks • World wide web is: • a subset of the internet •a system of linked hypertext documents •a point & click system making easy web “surfing”

  10. Who Owns/Regulates the Internet? • No one “owns” the internet • W3 Consortium • Sets language & protocal • IANA -Internet Assigned Numbers Authority • Guarantees no two domain names are identical

  11. 21st Century The Internet Evolves • FTP - file transfer protocal • World Wide Web – HTTP • Search engines to find information • Email • Instant messaging • Blogging • Social networking • What else?
