  2. It’s not the first time!

  3. Getting to Yes takes leadership • Tell the truth ... Not Why ...When • IP layer is special & IP layer now includes IPv6 • IP is strategic layer not tactical • So apply to business strategy (not tactical) • Position yourself into the adopter chain • Early ----- > late • Identify potential winners for your business

  4. The detail • Deal with tactical myths and objections • v6 has failed, expensive, nobody asks for it, no applications, difficult to justify investment, v4 works, OK if vendors offer it. We don’t choose technology • Understand what is current status • Standards, Implementations, Infrastructure, vendors, applications and users, • Understand your community • Locations, staff, customers, partners, • Have a transition strategy • Be ready

  5. How do we get to Yes?

  9. UK IPv6 User & Enterprise Survey 2004/5 • Private invitation surveys through major UK IT organisations in December 2004 • 189 responses • 83% use NAT • 1% support v6 • 25% trade with Asian partners who are deploying IPv6 • 27% have considered transition

  10. ISP Survey for LINX • 26 ISP’s responded • 71% considered migrating to add value • Want greater impetus to move ISP’s to IPv6 • IPv6 seen as inevitable • Due to competition & market forces • Drawbacks • Overheads and complexity, Multi Homing • Only 38% have IPv6 trained personnel • 50% of hosts now support IPv6

  11. Next Steps • Resource for IPv6 awareness • UK networks to offer IPv6 to customers • Establish an IPv6 related event in UK • Surveys for 2006 • V6 equipment “bake out” • promote & co-ordinate key IPv6 leadership • Operators and Networks • Key customer communities e.g., Gov, City, IT, Education, Health
