Early Man. What do you know about Early Man ?. Did man live at the same time as dinosaurs? -NO!!! But, they did face saber-toothed tigers, wooly mammoths & lions. 2. What is a fossil? -Fossils are remains of living things (plants, animals, people), not things that were made.

  2. What do you know aboutEarly Man? • Did man live at the same time as dinosaurs? -NO!!! But, they did face saber-toothed tigers, wooly mammoths & lions. 2. What is a fossil? -Fossils are remains of living things (plants, animals, people), not things that were made.

  3. What do you know aboutEarly Man? 3. What is an artifact? - Artifacts are remains of things that were made by man (tools, pottery), not remains of living things. 4. What is a Hominid? -Hominids are the ancestors of modern humans; human-like creatures that walked upright and made stone tools.

  6. Early Man: • There is more than just 1 type of early man: • Australopithecus: Afarensis, Africanus, Robustus • Homo Habilis • Homo Erectus • Neanderthals • Cro-Magnons and Homo Sapiens Sapiens

  7. Australopithecus • “Southern Ape” • Lived 3.6 to 1.8 Million BC • Human-like hominids • Lucy • Basic traits of humans. Special because he could stand up. • Main physical difference between early man and apes are the hands. (use tools)

  8. Australopithecus… • LUCY • Bones found in Ethiopia, Africa by Donald Johansson and Maurice Taieb • Around 20 when she died • Brain was size of an orange

  9. Homo Habilis • “Handy Man” = First to create tools • First true humans • Lived during the Stone Age due to their use of stone tools • Lived 2 million to 10,000 years ago • Man had to GET SMART to survive! • Did NOT have power over fire.

  10. Homo Habilis… • Taller than Australopithecus & had larger brains • Followed food sources & set up camp overnight • Main diet was fruits, roots, nuts & vegetables that they found growing wild • Small groups banded together for protection; not permanent though.

  11. Homo Erectus • “Upright Man” • 1.6 Million to 300,000 BC • About same size as us, but only 2/3 the brain size • Advanced tools (axes & knives) made them the first hunters • Made & Controlled Fire

  12. Homo Erectus… • Why was fire so important? • Most animals were afraid of fire • No longer had to shelter out of the wind • Could relight fire for heat • Could choose where they camped • Could move to colder regions • Helped them prepare food (thereby extending life and improving health)

  13. Homo Erectus… • First to move from Africa to Europe & Asia, and from Asia to America (during the Ice Age) • Peking Man • Found near Peking, China • Had weapons and tools on him

  14. Neanderthals

  15. Neanderthals • Neandertal vs. Neanderthal = Same thing. Named after the Neander Tal valley. • 500,000 to 30,000 BC • Neanderthals became extinct around 28-30,000 BC; overlapping in time with early modern humans

  16. Neanderthals… • Skeleton of old man found in the Neander Tal Valley • Originally thought to be dumb brutes with club & beast-like features. Later found to be untrue—Rather smart! • Were different from other species of early man • Much taller and very strong. Almost modern mentality; larger brains than us.

  17. Neanderthals… • Had skeletons shaped like ours • Brains were able to develop • Hunters & gatherers • Created stone tools, bone needles & bone fish hooks. Sewed clothes from animal skins. Made boots.

  18. Neanderthals… • Marvelous hunters • Often used caves as their homes • Buried their dead with ceremonies • Religion • Suggests thoughts of an afterlife • Died off around 30,000 BC • Killed off? • Married into Homo Sapiens? • …..?

  19. Homo Sapiens • “Cro-Magnon” • Bows & Arrows appear (after 20,000 BC) • Cro-Magnon cave art was not made with charcoal, but with mineral pigments • Lived all over the world: Europe, Asia, America, Africa

  20. Cro-Magnon • Homo sapiens that lived in Europe • Built permanent homes (tepee style) to protect themselves from winter. In summer, they were nomadic & lived in tents. • Ate a variety of seeds, berries, roots & nuts, & meat (were very good hunters). • Learned how to cure & store food for winter

  21. Cro-Magnon… • Used traps, bows & arrows, nets, fish hooks, & even poisons to catch food • Planned hunts, studied animals’ habits • Learned how to soften leather to make warm, comfortable clothes • Made necklaces & bracelets out of shells, teeth, feathers, flowers & bone. • Created pottery

  22. Cro-Magnon… • Weapons included stone axes, knives, spears, harpoons, wooden bows & sharp stone tipped arrows • Made the saber-toothed tiger & the wooly mammoth become extinct • Died off around 10,000 BC • Leaving US (Homo Sapiens Sapiens) as the only Humans!
