  2. Who was Gutenberg? • Borne 1398-1399 in Mainz, Germany • Grew up in a fairly wealthy family • Learned to read as a boy (read from hand copied books) • Believed everyone should have the opportunity to read

Who was Gutenberg? • As a young adult he began to spend most of his time in secret trying to figure out a quicker way of printing. • Almost all of his money was spent on his experiments and soon he had no money left to continue. • Met wealthy goldsmith and lawyer by the name of Johann Faust. Faust became interested in Gutenberg’s ideas and ended up giving Gutenberg the financial support that he needed to continue with his experiments.

The Gutenberg Printing Press • In 1445, Gutenberg, along with the help of other printers, invented the movable metal type printing press. • Had re-usable, metal blocks that enabled faster and more efficient printing. • It replaced the wooden printing blocks, which were tedious to make and not re-usable.

What was the significance of the printing press? • Book industry began to develop and it created an enormous book market. • Books could be printed faster and in bulk. • Books could be printed cheaper and therefore were affordable to almost everyone (though literacy remained an issue, previously, only the wealthy and those in church positions were the majority of educated readers). • Made it easier to teach and learn.

What were the first publications from the printing press? • The first books printed were bibles, sermons, prayer books, and other religious materials. • Gutenberg made sure that his printings of the bible were beautiful. He would go back and add color to each page by hand. • Over 200 copies were planned to be printed, but only 22 copies are known to exist today. • In today’s market, one Gutenberg bible is worth about 100 million dollars. One double sided page is worth about 100 thousand dollars.

The death of Johann Gutenberg • Gutenberg died in 1468 • He was not famous during his lifetime, and in fact lived in poverty toward the end of his life. • Before he died he was given a pension by the Archbishop of Mainz and lived comfortably for a short while. • It has been said that Gutenberg's invention of the printing press was the most important invention of the Renaissance.
