  1. 12 GeV Science Program R. D. McKeown JSA Science Council January 7, 2011 Thanks to A. Lung, L. Cardman, others

  2. 12 GeV Science Program • The physical origins of quark confinement (GlueX, meson and baryon spectroscopy) • The spin and flavor structure of the proton and neutron (PDF’s, GPD’s, TMD’s…) • The quark structure of nuclei • Probe potential new physics through high precision tests of the Standard Model • Defining the Science Program: • Five Reviews: Program Advisory Committees (PAC) 30, 32, 34, 35, 36 • 2006 through 2010 • Results: 37 experiments approved ; 12 conditionally approved • PAC37 scheduled January 2011: 9 new proposals, continue rankings Exciting slate of experiments for 4 Halls planned for initial five years of operation!

  3. 12 GeV Upgrade Project New Hall Add 5 cryomodules 20 cryomodules Add arc 20 cryomodules Add 5 cryomodules Enhanced capabilities in existing Halls Upgrade arc magnets and supplies CHL upgrade Maintain capability to deliver lower pass beam energies: 2.2, 4.4, 6.6…. • Scope of the project includes: • Doubling the accelerator beam energy • New experimental Hall and beamline • Upgrades to existing Experimental Halls

  4. 12 GeV Scientific Capabilities Hall D – exploring origin ofconfinementby studying exotic mesons Hall B – understanding nucleon structureviageneralized parton distributions Hall C – precision determination of valence quarkproperties in nucleons and nuclei Hall A – short range correlations, form factors, hyper-nuclear physics, futurenew experiments (e.g. PV and Moller)

  5. R. McKeown – HadronWorkhop - Beijing Quantum Numbers of Hybrid Mesons Exotic like Flux tube excitation (and parallel quark spins) lead to exotic JPC Excited Flux Tube Quarks Hybrid Meson like

  6. R. McKeown – HadronWorkhop - Beijing Proton Spin Puzzle [X. Ji, 1997] • DIS → DS  0.25 • RHIC + DIS → Dg« 1 • → Lq D. de Florian et al., PRL 101 (2008) 072001

  7. Unified View of Nucleon Structure d2kT drz d3r TMD PDFs f1u(x,kT), .. h1u(x,kT)‏ GPDs/IPDs 6D Dist. Wpu(x,kT,r ) Wigner distributions 3D imaging dx & Fourier Transformation d2kT d2rT Form Factors GE(Q2), GM(Q2)‏ PDFs f1u(x), .. h1u(x)‏ 1D

  8. PAC 12 GeV Science Categories • The Hadron spectra as probes of QCD(GluEx and heavy baryon and meson spectroscopy) • The transverse structure of the hadrons (Elastic and transition Form Factors) • The longitudinal structure of the hadrons (Unpolarized and polarized parton distribution functions) • The 3D structure of the hadrons(Generalized Parton Distributions and Transverse Momentum Distributions) • Hadrons and cold nuclear matter(Medium modification of the nucleons, quark hadronization, N-N correlations, hypernuclear spectroscopy, few-body experiments) • Low-energy tests of the Standard Model and Fundamental Symmetries(Møller, PVDIS, PRIMEX, …..)

  9. Super Bigbite Spectrometer (SBS) in Hall A Third tracker Hadron calorimeter Second tracker First tracker Vacuum snout Scattering chamber Beam line Pb shield CH2 analyzer Beam 48D48 magnet Magnetic shield MIE Funding schedule under discussion with DOE 11

  10. SBS: Extension GEn to High Q2 • The dramatic turnover of the Argonne DSE model would be clearly visible. • If the turnover is seen, it would provide strong evidence for the importance of diquark degrees of freedom in the nucleon form factors. 12

  11. Møller & Deep Inelastic Scattering Parity Violation • Dedicated Møller Experiment • (successor to SLAC E158) • DOE MIE proposal → CD0 • SoLID: general purpose deep inelastic parity violating experiment with solenoid • Chinese contribution

  12. Future PV Program

  13. Va. Tech. Physics Colloquium, Dec. 3, 2010 PAMELA Data on Cosmic Radiation Surprising rise in e+ fraction But not p • Could indicate low mass A’ (MA’ < 1 GeV ) • Or local astrophysical origin??

  14. New Opportunity: Search for A’ at JLab Va. Tech. Physics Colloquium, Dec. 3, 2010 Search for new forces mediated by ~100 MeV vector boson A’ with weak coupling to electrons: g – 2 preferred! • Irrespective of astrophysical anomalies: • New ~GeV–scale force carriers are important category of physics beyond the SM • Fixed-target experiments @JLab(FEL + CEBAF) have unique capability to explore this!

  15. A Short “White Paper” • NP2010 panel • IHEP, potential new collaborators

  16. 12 GeV Upgrade Schedule

  17. ACCELERATOR CONSTRUCTION • Major Procurements (> $500K) nearly complete: • cryomodule cavities • beam transport magnets • cryogenics coldbox • vacuum valves • cold tuner • etc. etc. etc. Cryomodule Cavities (12 of 80 ordered on site) 4-meter Dipole Magnets (23 of 37 ordered on site) Beam Transport Quadrupole Magnets (114 - total order - on site)
