  3. Use the map below to find the country that matches the following coordinates. • 10 degrees N, 70 degrees W - Venezuela • 40 degrees S, 70 degrees W - Argentina • 20 degrees S, 50 degrees W - Brazil

Describe the European colonization of South America and the West Indies. • European, mostly Spanish, came in search of the new world. • They sought land, gold and other natural resources. • They made permanent settlements such as San Salvador. • English, French and the Dutch also came to stake out their claim on the land. • In the West Indies and Brazil, African slaves were settled here as well to work on the Europeans plantations.

  5. 3.) How were most aboriginal (Native) tribes treated by the Europeans? How did a lot of the aborigines die? • Most native people (aborigines) were not treated well by the Europeans settlers. • Most natives died from harsh treatment from the Europeans (slave work) or diseases that they were not immune to.

  6. 4.) Farming and tourism are huge parts of the economy of these regions. Explain how these activities are based upon their geographic locations. • In the West Indies, farming and tourism are the main economic activities • Wealthy land owners grow crops such as sugarcane, bananas, coffee and tobacco • Many laborers (workers) grow the crops on the plantations • People from all over the world visit the West Indies on vacations and spend money at restaurants, sporting and water activities.

What makes it different from all of the other countries in this region? • Cuba is a communist state • Government has a strong control over the economy and society • Cuba is the ONLY Communist state in the Western Hemisphere • Most countries in the Western Hemisphere are Representative Democracies

What was the United States’ role in the building of the Panama Canal? • The United States had long sought after a shorter route to transport goods. • The U.S. helped Panama overthrow Columbia in exchange for permission to build the Panama Canal and to own the Panama Canal Zone. • U.S. owned the canal for over 80 years and finally gave control to Panama.

What effect did the Panama Canal have on the economies on countries around the world? • The economy in Panama is based on farming but most of its money comes from the Panama Canal. • The Canal earns the Panamanians money in several ways: • Provides jobs for the citizens • Tolls acquired from ships help the economy • Nearly half of the population of Panama lives and work near the Panama Canal.

  11. 9.) What is the highest waterfall in the world? • Angel Falls • Named after Jimmy Angel who crash landed near the falls • Located in Venezuela

  12. 10.) What are Columbia’s major exports? • Bananas • Cacao • Sugarcane • Rice • Cotton • COFFEE!!! Major crop used by people all over the world.

  13. 11.) Describe Columbia’s war on drugs. Explain how they are trying to get rid of their problem. Who is fighting the war on drugs? • In the 1980s, drug dealers became a major force in Columbia • They paid farmers to grow more coca leaves than the farmers would earn growing coffee. • Much of this cocaine is smuggle illegally into the US • The dealers use their profits to build private armies • They threaten to kill anyone who tries to stop them • Governments are trying to train their armies to catch drug dealers • People Fighting the war: government agencies, militaries, citizens, school children, police officers

  14. 12.) What is the different between limited and unlimited government? • Limited government – government in which the leader rules with restrictions. • Unlimited Government - government in which the leader rules with NO restrictions.

Define: • Landlocked: not bordering a sea or ocean, completely surrounded by land. • Altiplano: large highland plateau • Sodium Nitrate: Chemical used in fertilizers and explosives • Representative Democracy: government where people are represented by elected leaders • Communism: government allows little or private ownership and displays complete control over citizens • Federal Republic: form of government in which the national and state government share power
