  1. USGS Equipment Upgrades Final Phase – Amy Ludtke, Spring 2013

  2. USGS NTN Equipment Upgrades at 76 Sponsored Sites • Digital rain gages installed • 65 OttPluvio II • 7OttPluvio • 4 ETI Noah IV • Precipitation Collectors installed • 62N-Cons (82% installed) • 14 Aerochems left to be replaced • 9of the 14 sites left to install need solar upgrades

  3. Successful site upgrades, 62+

  4. New Equipment Notes: N-Cons with AC are easy to install. Take ~ 3 hours, after pipe set in concrete. We’ve had 2 of 72 OttPluvios fail to download data. Swapped bases out with new base and problem solved. Confusion on initial wiring and/or after parts are swapped out Biggest issue has been DC sites and N-Con power requirements.

  5. Solar Powered Sites had a challenging Winter… Weeks of data loss since 10/1/12 • AR02 9/29 (31%) • AZ99 2/29 (7%) • KS07 0/29 (0%) • KY35 7/29 (24%) • ME08 17/29 (59%) • OK00 11/29 (38%) • OR09 5/29 (17%) • *TX10 9/29 (31%) • VA00 2/29 (7%) • *WV04 22/29 (76%) * In bulk mode

  6. DC Solar Site at WV04 420 Watts Solar

  7. Solar Powered Sites (cont.) • NADP PO is investigating reducing N-Con power consumption • Modifying Theiss sensor’s heating elements • Looking at different sensor • Retrofitting N-Con with DC motor • Meantime, we’re holding off upgrading remaining 9 USGS solar sites • Converting sites to AC, if at all possible!

  8. Many Thanks to: NADP PO – David Gay, Roger Claybrooke, Bob Larson, Mark Rhodes, Chris Lehman & Jeff Pribble! USGS – Mark Nilles, Greg Wetherbee, and USGS field techs Eric Hebert w/ EE&MS NADP-NTN site supervisors and operators
