  2. Born • March 30th, 1945 • Born in Ripley, Surrey, England. • His mother was name Patricia Molly Clapton. • His father was named Edward Walter Fryer. • He took his mothers last name because his father left. • His Grandma and Grandpa raised Eric when he was a child.

  4. Childhood • While with his Grandparents he was around a lot of music and instruments. • Eric was an above average student who loved art. • When Eric’s mother returned from Canada she brought his 6 and a half year old step brother and scarred him for life.

  5. Childhood • Since his mom brought his step brother home he failed 11 exams and went into a bad school. • St. Bede’s Secondary Modern School, later he was sent to Holyfield Road School.

  6. Inspiration I • Eric Clapton got his first guitar at 13. • When Eric was 16 he went to the Kingston College of Art. He got expelled for not turning in any work, he was too focused on his guitar.

  7. Inspiration II • He was inspired blues and other guitarist like Freddie King, B.B. King, Albert king, Buddy Guy, and Hubert Sumlin. • His first band was The Roosters that he joined in beginning of 1963. The band broke up in August of 1963.

  8. Inspiration III • In October of 1963 Keith Relf and Paul Samwell Smith recruited him to be in the YardBirds. • After 18 months of being with him he got the nickname “Slowhand.”

  9. Career • When the Yardbirds began getting famous he quit because they changed their style to hip hop and Eric was more into the blues. • Eric joined John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers in 1965, that is the band where he got his reputation as a guitarist and he got his nick name “God.”

  10. Career II • Eric quit the Bluesbreakers to go tour with his friends, but he joined back with them when the tour was over. • Eric left the Bluesbreakers again in 1966.

  11. Career III • Eric joined up with Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker to form Cream. After 3 solid albums Eric was elevated to super star status. • Cream was together for only 2 years but they were considered one of the most influential rock groups of the modern era.

  12. Career IV • Cream disbanded because of the age of the members and the constant arguing. Their last performance was on November 26th 1968. • After Cream Clapton founded Blind Faith.

  13. Career v • Blind Faith was disbanded after one album. And a disastrous American tour. • After the band broke he tried to hide his fame by being a side man with Delaney & Bonnie & Friends.

  14. Career vi • In the summer of 1970 Eric formed Derek and the Dominoes with Jim Gordon, Carl Radle and Bobby Whitlock. They recorded the song Layla and other assorted love songs. • The band drifted apart after a failed attempt at a second album and an American Tour.

  15. Career vii • After the Dominoes broke up Eric went into a a 3 year heroin addiction. • With every album after 1973 he reinvented himself as an artist.
