Who am I?

  • Northeastern University – Class of ‘73

  • Senior Principal, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger

  • BS and SM (MIT) in civil engineering (structures)

  • Ph.D. in geotechnical engineering

  • Expertise in structural design and performance of buried pipes, tanks, and culverts

  • Mentor for NEU Uganda project since June ‘09

  • Many from other towns

  • Only high school in county

  • 5 primary schools

  • Prepare lunch at school

    • high amounts of iron

    • corrosive water

    • virtually no bacteria

  • OPEN WELLS

    • high bacteria counts

    • no metals

  • HEALTH

    • 2 meals/day

    • Malaria, tuberculosis, diarrhea, HIV

    • >1 hour getting water

Objective: From existing water sources, provide multiple water distribution points around the village of Bbanda.

Project criteria

  • 25 year design life

  • Use water from boreholes and springs as needed

  • Provide storage facility with min. 48 hr water supply for all residents in village

  • Distribute water to sufficient village locations to provide maximum ¼ mile travel from any home

  • No local power available

  • Project must be sustainable by local population and with local resources
