  14. Tips for Better Resume Writing • Avoid the first person pronoun “I” • Keep your sentences short and don’t worry about fragments • Use bulleted statements when appropriate • Use professional “buzzwords” e.g., Saxon math, highly qualified

  16. Your Career Fair – February 14 • Good First Step to Meet Employers face to face • You have to do more than press your suit and bring resumes • You need to prepare – follow the next 13 steps and you will be on the road to success

  17. Prepare: Step 1 • Know your school systems • www.nashvillefairs.org for a list • Identify ’5-10’ systems that you want to approach at the fair • Research your ‘hit-list’ prior to the fair

  18. Prepare: Step 2 • Know what you want • Know where you fit in the organization • “I’m looking for a position as a K-3rd teacher”

  19. Prepare: Step 3 • Prepare a two-to-three-line script and customize it to the needs of the systems you are most interested in. Include your name, class year, major and interests as they relate to that system. Include relevant experience in that area.

  20. For example: “Good afternoon Mr. Smith, my name is Don Smith and I am graduating from Tennessee Tech University in May with my BS degree in Secondary Math. I saw on your website that you currently have math positions open at three of your high schools. I am very interested in the High Bend School system, what should I do to apply?”

  25. Interview Essentials • The Career Fair is a form of an interview • A formal face-to-face interview may be held at the career fair • Be ready!

  26. Interview Structure • Introduction (Brief) • Interviewer Asks Questions (Extensive) • Candidate Asks Questions (Extensive) • Close (Brief) • Follow-up

  27. Introduction • The Important First Impression – Employers form an opinion about you in less than one minute. • Non-verbal Factors (handshake, punctuality, clothing, eye contact, grooming) • Verbal Factors – informal conversation, grammar, confidence in voice

  28. Answering Questions • Be prepared to talk about yourself • Practice responses to common questions • Give responses that reflect strengths • Be prepared to give examples of past experiences – past behavior predicts future behavior

  29. Asking Questions • Questions reflect that you are interested, intelligent and thorough • Prepare four questions that you will ask • Questions should show that you’ve done your homework • Don’t ask about salary, benefits, vacation

  30. Closing the Interview and Follow-up • Express your interest in the position • Reiterate your strengths • Find out the next step • ALWAYS --- Follow-up the interview with a thank-you note, reiterating your strengths and enthusiasm (typed or handwritten)
