  7. Breaking down prompts • The prompt for the Writing Test will be an informational prompt, which means that you could be asked to do one of two types of writing: • 1. definition • 2. cause and effect

  8. Extended Definition vs. Cause and Effect Prompts • Extended Definition: In an extended definition prompt, the writer identifies a key word or concept • Explain it to the reader and answers the question “What is it?” • A definition composition (prompt) goes beyond the concise, formal dictionary definition

  9. Extended Definition • A definition composition often explores the nature of something, considering such aspects as: • Where and how the word originated • What the word is not • Denotations and connotations of the word • Cultural contexts of the word

  10. What would an extended prompt look like? • “I have always found that mercy bears richer fruits than strict justice.”- Abraham Lincoln“ • Moral excellence comes about as a result of habit. We become just by doing just acts, temperate by doing temperate acts, brave by doing brave acts.”- Aristotle • “True peace is not merely the absence of tension: it is the presence of justice.”- Martin Luther King, Jr. • “That the poor are invisible is one of the most important things about them. They are not simply neglected and forgotten as in the old rhetoric of reform; what is much worse, they are not seen.”- Michael Harrington • “Revenge has no more quenching effect on emotions than salt water has on thirst.” – Walter Weckler • Write a speech to an audience of ex-convicts defining the meaning of justice. You may use the following information, your own experiences, observations, and/or readings.

  11. Cause and Effect Prompts • Cause-and-Effect writing gives reasons and explanations for events, conditions, or behavior. It answers the need most of us have to understand the world around us.

  12. Sample Cause and Effect Prompt • “Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed at to imitate them.”-- James Baldwin • “Child obesity is not a problem with the children. It is a problem with adults in society.”--Dr. Hamilton • “Obesity in children stores up a lifetime of poor health. These children are at a greater risk of having high blood pressure, developing diabetes and heart problems.” • Statistics show that the obesity rate of children under the age of 16 is growing at an alarming rate. Obesity in childhood can have life-long effects. You have been asked to speak to a group of 5th graders about this topic. In your speech include what you feel is a major cause contributing to obesity in children and explain the effect of this problem.

  13. Today, for both prompts, we’re going to work on.. • Reading AND identifying the type of prompt, identifying the purpose, identifying the audience, and identifying the context. • Identification-What kind of prompt are we dealing with? • Purpose – Who are you writing for? What assumptions can you make about them? • Audience- Identify the purpose (to define, to persuade, to explain, etc…) • Context- What are you writing about?

  14. The iPAC Chart Purpose Identification • Identify what is the type of prompt • Turn the prompt into a question • and list some possible answers • Eventually one of these answers will become the thesis statement Rewrite the purpose in your own words: The purpose of this {insert format} is to _____________________. Audience Context Describe your audience List three assumptions you can make about your audience Is it a letter, an article, an editorial, etc..?
