  2. At Christmas time we build a Christmas Crib. It remembers us Bethlehem, the little village where Baby Jesus was born. We prepare a starry paper sky, cardboards mountains full of little cardboard houses, we put mistletoe everywhere, we decorate with tree branches. We put a lot of little earth-ware or plastic shepherds, sheep, pigs, hens, ducks and other animals. Everywhere there are little colourful lights. In a crib we put a donkey, an ox and the Holy Family. It’s wonderful!

  3. Befana In Italy children believe in an old, kind, sweet lady (witch) named Befana. The night before the Epiphany she brings sweets, candies and toys to good ones and coal (sugar coal) to nasty ones. Here is a traditional rhyme dedicated to her: Befana comes at night With open mouth shoes A Roman type hat Hurray, Hurray for Her. As normal in Italia there’s a different rhythm and rhyme .

  4. CHRISTMAS MEANS ALSO “TOMBOLA” AND OTHER GAMES Tombola is a traditional Italian game for the whole family to play. It’s a kind of Bingo. It get the whole family laughing together with this game for all ages. It is also a good tool for learning Italian numbers and through the names for the numbers, some vocabulary, too. All the 90 numbers have a correspondence in a name, so who calls the numbers can also say only the Italian objects’ names. Everyone aged 5 to 80 and upwards, armed with jingling coins and a handful of legumes (dried beans, chick peas, broad beans) or cardboard chips to mark off the numbers on their cards. All ready for Tombola, legendary, enthralling, loved by the fortunate and almost hated by loser who, nevertheless, count on a comeback. The stake depends on the number of players and cards bought. Each has their favourite cards, jealously preserved with their name written on the back. The resulting sum is divided to form the various pots: starting with two on a line and ending with tombola, the jackpot for who first manages to cover all 15 numbers on the card.

The Italian game card "Sette e mezzo" or "Seven and half" is a typical Christmas game. You have to bet your "virtual" dollars and then take a card from the pack, and trying to reach 7 and half point to win.
