  2. DTA Scotland • Independent charitable company established in 2003 • Membership-based & run by volunteer board from DTs • 200 member Development Trusts • Currently mainly funded through two Scottish Government contracts

  3. DTAS Role • Improve effectiveness of member development trusts & promote networking • Support establishment of new DTs • Deliver Community Ownership Support Service for community asset transfers • Promote the DT approach, influencing policy & representing sector’s views and interests

  4. Development Trust: • community organisations set up by ordinary people to improve the quality of life within their own communities • about communities agreeing aspirations and development priorities for their areas, and making them a reality

  5. Development Trust Key Characteristics • Vision & set of priorities determined by the local community • Independent open membership, accountable to members & with strong local leadership • Good local profile & support from community • Increasing focus on enterprise and viable asset base • Effective working relationships with partners

  6. Why development trusts do what they do • address the “market failures” identified by their communities • grasp new development opportunities • generate their own income

  10. DTAS Members’ Survey (2011) • c. 200 member development trusts • 2,258 volunteers, incl. 1,823 board members • 727 staff employed • £39m of income; 37% “earned” • £51m worth of assets
