  2. i2010 Priorities • Single Information Space • The consolidation of a Single Information Space for a consistent internal market for information society and media services • A vision of convergence based on high speed networks, availability of content on line, secure networks and services, interoperable solutions • Legal framework for audiovisual and media service • Regulatory framework for electronic communications • Support for creation and distribution on European content • Addressing spectrum management, security, interoperability for convergence, RFID, Mobile TV….

  3. i2010 Priorities • Innovation and investment in research Priorities: a) Strengthening Innovation and Investment in ICT research • Promote the use of ICT by business Instruments: • 7th Framework programme for Research (FP7) • ICT Policy Support Programme in Competitiveness and Innovation Programme (CIP) • European Technology Platforms & Joint Technology Initiatives

  4. i2010 Priorities • Inclusion, better public services and quality of life • Prioritise better public services and quality of life • EU Initiative on e-Inclusion to address needs of older people, geographical digital divide, eAccessibility, cultural diversity… • EU Action Plans on better public services (e-Health, e-Government) • Programmes for quality of life (ICT for Ageing Well, Intelligent Car, Digital Libraries, ICT for sustainable growth)

Major results of the MTR • ICTs continue to be a major driver of economic and social modernisation • Business in the EU devote 20% of investment to ICTs (26 % overall research) • 60 % of basic public services are now fully available online, half of EU citizens use the internet regularly • Europe is among the world leaders in the development of the digital economy • European Broadband market with 90 millions lines has more subscribers than any other economic region • European countries top the world league in broadband take-up, mobile penetration, data traffic.

Future Challenges • increase the contribution of ICTs to economic structural reform as part of the national strategies to achieve Lisbon goals • reduce the disparities in the development in Information Society in the EU, in particular by speeding up wide spread use of ICT applications and new services • stimulate research in ICT to close the research gap with other regions in the world • create the appropriate conditions for rolling out of the infrastructures for very high speed access (fixed and mobile) • define ambitious targets for broadband penetration at the national level, with a view to reaching an EU average of 30% by 2010 • implement an eInclusion strategy.
