Lipkin Phase Stability of t’ Zirconia (doped) • Toughness in thermal barrier oxides associated with tetragonal compositions that are synthesized as metastable solid solutions. Temperature capability limited by decomposition toward equilibrium. The DYNES team has produced the first microstructural insight into the decomposition sequence of coatings produced by plasma sprayed and physical vapor deposition. Remarkably, the fine structure from both types of coatings is very similar (right micrographs). Gao Phase evolution in APS 8YSZ as a function of a Temperature-Time Larson-Miller type parameter.   2. Industrial Interactions A DYNES workshop was held at UCSB in Jan. 2008, attended by a large number of industrial and academic researchers from the US, Europe, Latin America and Japan. The DYNES team also had its second summer meeting on August 5-6 at GE-GRC. PI Pollock spent part of her sabbatical at GE-GRC and other co-PI’s visited individually at various times during the year. Industrial support to the academic team has been exemplary, providing samples designed jointly with the academic team and fully collaborating in the research. Notable examples are the studies on phase stability and combinatorial oxidation/corrosion studies. Academic PI’s had additional interactions with other companies, notably Honeywell, Pratt&Whithey, Rolls Royce and Siemens. Erin Donohue (center) with Prof. Muñoz group in Querétaro, Mexico. International Activities Graduate students Erin Donohue (UCSB) and Jason Van Sluytman (Michigan) are doing research at CINVESTAV (Mexico) and Univ. of Sydney (Australia), respectively. A post-doc (Mercer) is spending a year with Prof. Kagawa at NIMS as part of a joint collaboration with UCSB (Evans). The CIAM collaboration with Mexico and Brazil on ferroelastic high temperature oxides has been initiated.A student from CINVESTAV is visiting UCSB for 5 months to work with Profs. McMeeking, Evans and Levi, and 4 researchers from IAE (Brazil) will be visiting UCSB this Fall. Levi is also co-advising a CINVESTAV student. Two undergraduate students from U. Stuttgart spent 3 months at UCSB doing research with Prof. Levi and Evans.
