  1. Light and Sound are Similar

  2. Light and Sound are Similar Light and sound have some things in common.

  3. Where is there light in this room? Light is all around us. Make a new title page: Light and Sound

  4. How does light travel? Learning Objectives: • To understand that light travels from a source. • To know that light travels at a very high speed, much faster than sound.

  5. Energy Light and sound both come from a source. Light sources give out light energy. Sound sources give out sound energy.

  6. Draw a table to show five sources of light energy and five sources of sound energy.

  7. Task • Draw some lightning then try to explain which comes first, the clap of thunder or the flash of lightning? • Why does one come before the other? • What happens if you move further away from the storm?

  8. Light travels much faster than sound. For example: • Thunder and lightning start at the same time, but we will see the lightning first. • 2) When a starting pistol is fired we see the smoke first and then hear the bang.

  9. Light travels VERY FAST – around 300,000 kilometres per second. At this speed it can go around the world 8 times in one second.

  10. 8K Light shifts How long does light take to reach us from... 1 the Sun 2 Pluto 3 the Moon 4 the nearest star other than the Sun 5 a computer screen on your desk A almost instantly B 1.3 seconds C 10 hours D 8.5 minutes E 4 years D 8.5 minutes C 10 hours B 1.3 seconds E 4 years A almost instantly

  11. Reflection Light is reflected from some surfaces. Sound is reflected from some surfaces. When sound is reflected, we call it an ECHO

  12. Speed Light travels at different speeds in different substances Sound travels at different speeds in different substances

  13. Put the following speeds of sound in order. Start with the fastest. Water = 1500m/s Iron = 5000m/s Wood = 3850m/s Air = 330m/s

  14. Iron = 5000m/s Wood = 3850m/s SOUND TRAVELS FASTEST IN SOLIDS Water = 1500m/s Air = 330m/s

  15. Refraction Light can change direction when it enters a different substance. Sound can change direction when it enters a different substance.

  16. Frequency Different frequencies of light give different COLORS. Different frequencies of sound give different pitches of noise.
