  • Located in West Africa
  • The name Nigeria was taken from the Niger river, running through the country
  • Three largest ethnic groups: Hausa, Ibo, Yoruba

Things Fall Apart
  • Was written by Chinua Achebe and published in 1958
  • The setting is the late 1800’s, just prior to and during the expansion of the British into Umuofia
  • The novel depicts the beginning of British Colonialism in Nigeria
  • Colonialism: the control of one nation by another independent nation

  • The profit of the slave trade was what primarily brought Europeans to West Africa.
  • Capturing and selling slaves made Europeans rich. Unpaid slave labor set up their families for generations.

The Price of Palm Oil
  • Palm oil has many uses in Nigeria and to the Ibo people as a cooking oil, and is also fermented to make wine.
  • It is extracted from the fruit of the oil palm tree
  • British settlers who came to Nigeria sought after palm oil which they used as lubrication for their machines, and also as the base of soaps and detergents such as Lever and Palmolive.
