History • 1999 National Strategy for Carers: “People in every community need a range of support services and networks” • Evidence suggested that carers benefit from other carers in a similar situation • Such contact provides information about the services they need, how to cope with caring and the reassurance that they are not alone
Background & Challenges Northumberland’s challenges due to it’s demographics: • Sparsely populated rural areas and heavily populated urban areas • Northumberland ranked generally in 44-55% most deprived county authorities with 18% of Northumberland’s population living in the most deprived areas in England • Ageing population
Carer Provision • Two isolated carers projects each existing due to carer demand in the North of the county and South East of the county • No generic provision elsewhere for carers • Fragmented pockets of specialised support for carers elsewhere
Consultation with Carers & Professionals • Core ULO principles underpinned efforts in establishing a single generic organisation • Ongoing collation of carer need through individual projects • Carer consultation & strategy group • One single generic organisation which would support all carers irrespective of where they live in the county
Establishment of Carers Northumberland • Establishment of a trustee board with majority of trustees as carers • Secured funding from Northumberland Care Trust, The Big Lottery and Northern Rock Foundation in April 2008 • Programme of core carer services delivered countywide
Support for carers Information service 0844 800 7354 Single point of access for carers for Information & enquiries Carers are informed of their rights & issues that affect them Carers are supported to access wider support from health & social care professionals
Area Specific Support • Area development officers offering one to one support – area based offices • Carer support groups throughout the county • Activities, events and information sessions • Training for carers • Consultation via support groups and one to one support • Activities in areas demand driven
Additional Projects • Department of Health Pilot to encourage carers to receive carers health check – specific GP carer support workers and district nurses • Young Carers Project Lead – consultation with young carers and existing support has identified gaps and is evidencing the need for young carers service • Emergency card scheme with British Red Cross
Meeting carer need & encouraging carers to become involved • Opportunities for carers to become involved with Carers Northumberland in volunteering capacity • CN is a membership organisation therefore carers vote for members of trustee board or have opportunity to become a member of trustee board themselves • Carer consultations to influence service delivery • Ongoing evaluation of carer support to ensure supply is meeting demand
