Preliminary Design Review Group 13 – Flapping Wing MAV NASA Parker Cook George Heller Joshua Nguyen Brittney Theis
The Customer • Dr. Shih • Funding to be provided by the NASA Ames facility
The Problem • We are tasked with designing and building a micro aerial vehicle (MAV) that is competition legal for the European Micro Air Vehicle Conference and Flight Competition.
Original Design • 2 Flapping Wings • Controlled rotation of the wings • The wings use a track to slide back and forth • DC Motor rotating causes the wings to flap
DelFly Inspired • 2 sets of wings in an collapsing/expanding x formation in an up and down movement • Ruddervator • Very small and compact
Blimp • - Blimp filled with hydrogen • Flapping wing control system • or rotary Rotary • - Dual Wing, counter rotating helicopter • - Very precise hovering • - Small
Dragon Fly Inspired • 2 sets of wings in an collapsing/expanding x formation in an up and down movement • Tail rotor • DC Motor rotating • A larger toy
Dual Flapping Wing • Dual flapping wings that flap in • contrary horizontal flapping • motions • - Tail rotor to control yaw Rotary and Flapping Symbiosis • Set of flapping wing for forward • propulsion • - Rotary wings for lift • - Would require a tail rotor
Bird • - Actuated joints in all directions that cause the wings to curve in aiding to the flight Bat • - Fast flapping • - More fixed wing then bird but jointed
Design Chosen The Delfly inspired design was chosen as our flapping wing MAV because of its ability to meet our customers needs and has the highest probability to fulfill our design criteria and complete all necessary functions.
Immediate Future Plans • Complete Budget Layout of materials. • Detailed design drawings. • Pro-E model of product. • Various testing for best possible design/materials (ex: wind tunnel, wing strength vs weight) • Begin purchasing materials.
